Cornwall Geothermal Electricity Scheme on Hold (This is Cornwall)

A £50 Million scheme to generate electricity using heat stored deep beneath the south-west English countryside has been put on hold pending government support.

Geothermal Engineering has planning permission to drill into the rocks at United Downs in Cornwall and been offered £6 million towards the project from the UK Regional Growth Fund (RGF).

But the company has been unable to secure enough matched funding from the private sector to begin.

Ryan Law, managing director of Geothermal Engineering, said it could lose the RGF funding and that the scheme at Redruth was on hold until the Government indicated how it wanted the sector to develop.
