Piping Work on Olkaria to Finish by March 2014 (The Star)

The Chinese firm undertaking the piping work on the 280 MWe geothermal plant in Olkaria has said it will complete the work next year. Sinopec International Petroleum Company won the Sh11.6 billion contract to pipe steam from all the steam wells to the geothermal plant located at Olkaria.

“We expect the piping work on the entire 280 MWe project to be complete by early March, 2014," said  Sinopec International deputy director Huang Guo.

The project, will build four additional geothermal power stations with a capacity of 70 MWe each at two powerplants, Olkaria I and Olkaria IV.

Construction work and piping system installation covers over 40 kilometres and includes various pipe sizes which range up to 42 inches in diameter. Wells for producing steam for the project which are funded buy the Kenyan government have already been successfully drilled. There are 57 wells with a steam harvest able to generate 380 MWe.
