Kenya:
The Olkaria II power station is not only the biggest power plant in Kenya but the entire African Continent. Built in the 90s the power station has been able to generate some 105 MWe to boost the national grid. The plant solely relies on steam which is tapped some 3000 meters beneath the earth to generate electricity. Before the construction of Olkaria II, Olkaria I Power Station had the capacity of producing 45 MWe. Nimrod Taabu now looks at the importance of these two power plants operated by KenGen in supplementing the National grid and why geothermal energy is fast becoming more popular and reliable than hydro and wind energy.
