The estimated power that could be produced by the extra geothermal power plants is 625 MWe, Fréttablaðið reports.
The next projects being undertaken Landsvirkjun will be in the Bjarnarflag and Þeistareykir geothermal areas in Northeast Iceland. In the past years, the company has worked on preparations for three to four plants in these locations.
Tenders for drilling in up to three high-temperature boreholes in Bjarnarflag were made in June and the project is well underway.
Among other power plant options that are being looked into by Landsvirkjun is a geothermal plant in the Köldukvíslarbotnar geothermal area near Hágöngur. Drilling has already taken place in the area.
