The Geothermal Development Company has invited investors to co-finance the development of an 800 MWe power generation project in Menengai scheduled to be operational by 2021. The investors, expected to be four, will put up between 60-to 80 per cent of the capital and will be repaid through the sale of steam to power generators over a period of 20 years, GDC said yesterday in a paid advertisement.

The project is the second phase of the development of the Menengai steam field estimated to have geothermal potential of 1600MW. “GDC intends to engage four equity investors who will each get the opportunity to jointly develop 200 MWe with GDC at its Menengai geothermal field,” the statement in the dailies read. “The investors, under a joint steam development contract, will finance between 60-to 80 per cent of the required capital.”
