Japan:

Geothermal Project Stalled by Opposition in Fukushima (The Yomiuri Shimbun)

A proposed large-scale geothermal project in Fukushima Prefecture has been stalled by opposition from local hot spring resort operators, despite the prefectural government's support for the development.

The prefecture, badly affected by the crisis at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant, which began in March 2011, is promoting renewable energy use as a key to recovery. The prefectural government welcomes the geothermal project, as it is "in line with our reconstruction plan," officials said.

The project, prompted by the central government's deregulation on excavation work in March, was initiated by Idemitsu Kosan Co. and eight other companies. The government relaxed regulations on some drilling work in national parks under certain conditions, to promote renewable energy projects.
