The GDC managing director Dr Silas Simiyu said the corporation will sign a deal with the university before April. He said there is lack of adequate personnel in the field. The MD spoke when he met physics students from the university who had visited the site where GDC is exploiting geothermal energy in Menengai in Nakuru County.
“The corporation has already acquired some 100 acres within Nakuru county which will be used to construct the corporation’s headquarters. The Headquarters will also have facilities such laboratories that will be available for use by the university,” said the MD.
He said there many areas that the corporation and the university can work together including safeguarding the environment and pasteurisation of milk. “GDC is yet to explore areas that that have the potential to produce geothermal energy in Rongai, Bogoria, Silale in East Pokot,” he said. Simiyu said his organisation has undertaken consultancy services on geothermal development in Saudi Arabia, Rwanda and Malawi.
The deputy registrar academic affairs Dr Francis Nderitu, and the chairman of the physics department Dr M.S Kinei welcomed the cooperation between the GDC and the university saying it will enhance the practicals skills of the students. They said the Physics Department in the University did not have teaching staff to supervise Masters and Doctrate students and called for assistance from the GDC.
