Kengen launches 540MW geothermal power plant

Kenya Electricity Generating Company has launched a 540 megawatt geothermal power plant in bid to increase electricity generation in the country.
Kengen has also acquired two additional rigs at a cost of 15 million so as to as to speed up drilling of steam wells in Olkaria and Eburru.

Addressing the press yesterday at the Olkaria plant during the launch, geothermal development project manager Geoffrey Muchemi said that the rigs, were an addition to the four old ones that are at the Olkaria site.

Mr Muchemi said the power plant is expected to start generating electricity in April next year, hence boosting the generation of electricity in the country.
