Geothermal Power Tanzania Plans First Steam Generation Next Year (Bloomberg)

Geothermal Power Tanzania Ltd. plans to invest as much as $350 million to drill steam fields in the country’s south and build its first geothermal plants with the capacity to generate up to 140 MWe by 2018.

The company began drilling two wells in Tanzania’s southwestern Mbeya region this year and found there’s potential to create power from steam within at least two systems in the area, Chairman Graeme Robertson said in an interview today.

Geothermal Power, which has six prospecting licenses in Tanzania, may initially install a wellhead generator to provide 2 MWe by the middle of next year. So-called wellhead generators produce power once steam fields are ready, much quicker than awaiting construction of full-fledged plants.

The company then plans to deploy generations units capable of producing 5 to 10 MWe within two years and eventually 25 MWe units, Robertson said. “The actual potential will depended on the flow rates,” he said.

Geothermal Power is exploring options to raise funds including approaching development lenders such as the World Bank and African Development Bank, Robertson said.

Geothermal Power Tanzania Ltd. is 70 percent owned and managed by Mauritius-based Geothermal Power Ltd. The rest is held by Tanzania’s National Development Corp. and Interstate Mining & Minerals Ltd. in Tanzania, according to its website.

Tanzania: Government Helps Fund 200 MW Lake Ngozi Geothermal Power Project

Tanzania allocates US $8.7m for Lake Ngozi geothermal project (Construction Review Online)

The government of Tanzania has set aside US $8.7m in the 2018/ 2019 fiscal year for the Lake Ngozi geothermal project in Mbeya region.

The chairman of the Tanzania Geothermal Development Company (TGDC), Beatus Segeja confirmed the reports during his visit in Lake Ngozi and said the government was in collaboration with the country’s electric supply company to see through the progress of the construction works.

The first geothermal project in the country is expected to produce 200 MW of power from geothermal energy resources by 2025. Currently, there are 50 areas that are considered to have potential for geothermal development.

The [resource] temperature is not less than 230 centigrade with a PPM 1450 chloride making it suitable for the project. According to Mr. Segeja, TGDC will drill three wells [at] Lake Ngozi that would be later connected to the main grid.

Tanzania Geothermal Development Company To Start Construction Of Power Plants By June 2016 (Tanzania Invest)

The Tanzanian Minister of Energy and Minerals, Prof. Sospeter Muhongo, has recently committed the Tanzania Geothermal Development Company (TGDC) to start with drilling activities in the Lake Ngozi area in the Mbeya region in southern Tanzania by June, 2016, to set the basis for the construction of power plants for geothermal generation.

According to TGDC, Tanzania has a geothermal electricity generation potential up to 5,000 MW thanks to its strategic position between the eastern and western arms of the East African Rift Valley, which has given Tanzania the third largest geothermal resources in Africa following Kenya and Ethiopia with approximately 10,000 MW.

Tanzania Mulls Investing in Geothermal Power (Daily News)

Tanzania is looking into investing heavily in renewable energy, especially geothermal power on that the rock originated heat energy happens to be both cost-effective and greener for the environment.

Speaking in Arusha, Assistant Commissioner for Renewable Energy in the Ministry of Energy and Minerals, Mr Edward Ishengoma, revealed during the official opening of a two-day geothermal training that renewable energy was currently the last resort in the wake of ravages from global warming.

The official said once all geothermal sources were explored Tanzania would be in a position to sell surplus power to neighboring countries. He said Tanzania had 50 identified potential areas across the country which were yet to be explored.

Tanzania has the longest rift stretch in eastern Africa, 52 identified sites with a geothermal potential of 650 MW that have not been fully exploited. For many years, Tanzania relied much on hydropower as the main source of power, which proved a failure as most rivers fell prey to the impacts of climate change.

Tanzania: Plans for 200 MW Geothermal Power by 2025

The government will start construction of a geothermal energy power plant in Lake Ngozi, Mbeya Region in 2021, the Tanzania Geothermal Development Company (TGDC) has said.

Speaking during a recent workshop for Parliamentary Committee on Energy and Minerals members, the company's General Manager, Mr Kato Kabaka, said the government had already dished out 20.714bn/- for the purchase of drilling machine at the project site.

"Presently, the government is finalising the process to amend the law which will facilitate management of geothermal development in the country," said the TGDC's general manager while making a presentation to the workshop.

Mr Kabaka explained that the government plans to implement construction projects of seven geothermal energy power plants between 2021 and 2025, saying the geothermal energy would provide the country with yet another opportunity to facilitate implementation of the industrial economy.

He said the projects will be carried out in Songwe, Luhoi in Lower Rufiji River, Kiejo-Mbaka, Lake Natron and Lake Ngozi in Mbeya Region, saying upon completion, the plants would generate 200 megawatts.

 

Mr Kabaka said implementation of Lake Ngozi geothermal energy power plant construction was currently at drilling levels, saying three geothermal wells for the pilot project will be complete within 23 months.

"Lake Ngozi geothermal energy power plant will be able to generate 30 megawatt which will be pumped into the national grid," he said.

Tanzania: Potential 5,000 MW of Geothermal Energy Can be Developed

Tanzania Can Learn From Iceland Geothermal Energy Strides (All Africa)

Geothermal energy, if properly developed will be able to power the industries in environmentally friendly way and will pave a way to meet the country industrialization objectives as stated in Tanzania Development Vision 2025 and as advocated by President John Magufuli.

According to the available geoscientific data and current technology, the crude estimated potential of above 5,000 MW of electricity has been established in Tanzania.

The government of Tanzania has already established the Tanzania Geothermal Development Company (TGDC), which is a subsidiary company of Tanesco and is a 100 per cent state-owned agency. The aim of TGDC is to accelerate the development of geothermal resources in the country and to realize its ambitious vision of 2025.

However, the current geothermal regulatory framework is not well coordinated. There is still no geothermal policy and no legislation that can link together all the existing structure.

Tanzania is set to start producing geothermal power by 2020 after identifying potential areas for the newly discovered underground source of energy.

Presenting the paper at the 5th African Rift Geothermal Conference (ARGeo-C5) in Arusha on Friday, the General Manager of the Tanzania Geothermal Development Company (TGDC), Boniface Njombe, said Tanzania has identified 50 potential areas across the country from where 5,000 MW can be produced.

He said such areas need to be explored through Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement to enable the country produce 200 MW from geothermal by 2020. “As government, we want to effectively utilize all potential sources of power available in the country and geo-thermal is one of them.

The Tanzanian government plans to start exploiting geothermal power at Lake Ngozi in Mbeya in the next fiscal year.

The generation will alleviate electricity shortages in Tanzania, which heavily relies on hydropower and lately gas.

The manager planning and projects for the Tanzania Geothermal Development Company, Mr Shakiru Kajungus, told The Citizen a renewable energy forum that feasibility studies in Songwe, Mbaka Kiejo and Ngozi had been completed.

According to Mr Kajungus, 200 MW of geothermal energy are expected to be generated by 2025. He said the government was working with foreign development partners to get more funds for the project.

Tanzania has 50 areas potential for generating 5,000 MW of geothermal power.

Geothermal Power Tanzania Ltd. Receives Permit for Exploration Drilling at Ngozi (ThinkGeoEnergy)

Geothermal Power Tanzania (GPT) has announced that it has received clearance from the National Environment Management Council (NEMC) last month for exploration drilling. The company will now proceed with geothermal development in Tanzania.

Still unexploited, Tanzania has an expected 650 MW geothermal potential ready to harvest. One of the largest reserves lies in the Ngozi-Songwe geothermal system. Holding several prospecting license in Mbeya region, GPT is ready to develop the geothermal reservoir in the Ngozi volcanic complex.

Prior to drilling deep geothermal wells, an environmental study had to be undertaken to prove that all national regulations were satisfied regarding safety, reliability and quality. GPT has achieved this milestone, which allows the company to advance to the deep drilling stage and advance the project towards realizing Tanzania’s first geothermal project with an estimated capacity of 100 MWe.

Kenya, Tanzania to Partner on Geothermal Project (The Star)

Kenya has entered into a partnership with Tanzania to develop geothermal exploration. Tanzania’s Energy Com- missioner Hosea Mbise has said the country is exploring alternative sources of renewable energy to shift its over- reliance on hydro-electric power.

The partnership was agreed on following a week- long tour to Kenya by 32 members of the Tanzanian Parliamentary Committee on Energy and Mining. During the tour of the Menengai Geothermal Station, that started on Sunday and ends tomorrow, Mbise said the deal will see Kenya set up modalities to explore geothermal power.

He said Tanzania will rely on Kenya’s geothermal expertise, experience and equipment to diversify sources of electric power. Key areas of the partnership deal unveiled yesterday will include training for Ministry of Energy staff in Tanzania.

Tanzania: Icelandic and Norwegian Agencies Fund Geothermal Exploration Project

A cooperation agreement has been signed with the Ministry of Energy and Minerals in Tanzania for support to geothermal development in the country under the joint Nordic Development Fund (NDF) and Icelandic International Development Agency (ICEIDA) regional Geothermal Exploration Project. The main objective of this regional project is to assist countries in East Africa to enhance geothermal knowledge and capacity in order to enable further actions on geothermal utilization. This includes active support during the exploration phase of geothermal development.

The implementing agency in Tanzania is the Tanzania Geothermal Development Company (TGDC). The objective of the sub-project is to enhance knowledge of selected geothermal areas in Tanzania, including Luhoi, Ngozi and Kiejo-Mbaka, and to identify potential sites for exploration drilling and improved capacity to advance geothermal energy production. The sub-project places particular emphasis on capacity-building for Tanzanian experts through hands-on training during surface exploration and lectures on methods and interpretation.

The ICEIDA/NDF support has been organised in coordination with other on-going programs in the sector.

Sospeter Muhongo, minister of energy and minerals, has ordered the Tanzania Geothermal Development Company (TGDC) to begin drilling three holes in the Lake Ngozi area.

Business Week reported that in 2015, TGDC general manager Boniface Njobe said Tanzania has identified 50 potential areas across the country where 5,000 MW of geothermal power could be produced.

Njobe said these areas need to be explored through Public-Private Partnership arrangements, which would enable the country to produce 200 MW from geothermal by 2020.

Toshiba Corporation today announced that the company has concluded a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Tanzania Geothermal Development Company Limited (TGDC) for comprehensive collaboration in the geothermal power generation business. This is TGDC’s first MOU with a Japanese company. TGDC and Toshiba will collaborate to promote a geothermal power generation business and human resource development in Tanzania.

Tanzania has a plan to rapidly increase its total power generation capacity from the current 1,577 MW to 10,000 MW by 2025, raising expectations for geothermal generation.

East Africa: 11 Expressions of Interest Received for Geothermal Risk Mitigation Facility 5th Application Round

Information on Receiving 5th AR Expression of Interest – 12th December 2017 (News Release)

The African Union Commission (AUC) officially acknowledges that on 12 December 2017 11 Expressions of Interest (EoI) for the Geothermal Risk Mitigation Facility (GRMF) 5th Application Round (AR) were received on time and were accepted for bid opening, which took place on the same date. The eleven EoIs consisted of 6 Surface Studies and 5 Drilling Programmes. Apart from 5 SS projects all included a request to support related infrastructure to upgrades. The EoI came from 6 countries (Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania) and were submitted by private, as well as public entities:

All applicants with successful EoI in AR 5 – including those who have already passed the EoI stage in the AR 1 to AR 4 but have to-date not managed to submit a successful RfA, will be invited to the mandatory pre-bidding workshop.  The exact date and location still are to be announced. Tanzania: Government Helps Fund 200 MW Lake Ngozi Geothermal Power Project

Government invests $8.7 million in Ngozi geothermal project (Afrik 21)

The Tanzanian authorities are redoubling their efforts to exploit the country’s geothermal potential. After announcing a few months ago that the geothermal project, located near Lake Ngozi, would require an investment of $821 million, a decision was made to open the first round of investments for the installation of the facilities. A total of $8.7 million will be provided by the government.

The Ngozi geothermal project is expected to have a total capacity of 600 MW. To date, 50 sites have been identified with sufficient potential for the first phase of the project. It consists of producing 200 MW, and then 400 MW for Phase II. The latter also includes the construction of an 18 km transmission line between Ngozi and Mwakibete, also in the Mbeya region.

Exploration of the Ngozi geothermal project is still ongoing. This phase of the project was financed to the tune of $21.7 million by the Climate Investment Fund (CIF). The funding is part of the CIF’s Renewable Energy Expansion Program (REEP). Of the amount injected, $5 million represents a loan of $16.73 million from the African Development Bank (AfDB).

Symbion to Introduce Geothermal Power in Tanzania (AllAfrica.com)

Symbion Power is one of the founding partners of Power Africa, and as one of the initiative’s private sector leaders, it aims to show results. “We were honored that President Barack Obama chose the Symbion Power Plant to announce Power Africa on his recent visit to Tanzania,” said Paul Hinks, Chief Executive Officer of Symbion Power.

Since Power Africa was announced, Symbion has signed a new agreement for geothermal power in Tanzania to use equipment and know how of Ormat Technologies Inc. from Nevada, and it will shortly make an announcement about a new initiative in Kenya, he said, adding “it is the President’s Power Africa initiative that is driving these new investments.”

Tanzania to Reverse VAT On Renewable Energy Technologies (AllAfrica)

The Tanzanian government has in principle agreed to reverse its decision to remove all Value Added Tax (VAT) exemptions on renewable energy technologies thanks to lobbying and advocacy by members of the Tanzania Renewable Energy Associations (TAREA).

Speaking at a workshop towards universal access in Tanzania stakeholder consultation, the TAREA Executive Secretary, Mr Matthew Matimbwi, said that when the government last year announced that renewable technologies like solar, wind and geothermal would be taxed, it was a huge disincentive.

"Since November last year until the end of the parliament session that ended last weekend, we have been engaging the authorities and they have now agreed to reverse their decisions, this is a clear indication of the value renewable energy is currently being given," he said.
