China plans to boost the use of geothermal energy to 70 million tonnes of coal equivalent by 2020 to reduce reliance on coal, state news agency Xinhua reported on Tuesday.
** Geothermal energy will supply 40 million tonnes of coal equivalent for heating purpose by 2020, the report said, citing a renewable energy plan by the National Development and Reform Commission and the National Energy Administration.
** Renewable energy will supply 27 percent of China' total power generation by the end of 2020.
** Coal supplied 59.8 percent of China's total energy need in the first half of this year, down 0.6 percentage point versus a year earlier.
