El Salvador: Berlin Geothermal Plant gets an Upgrade

Turbine in Unit 3 of Berlin Geothermal plant to be replaced

David Lopez Villafuerte, the president of CEL (Comisión Ejecutiva Hidroeléctrica del Río Lempa), confirmed that the turbine of Unit 3 in the Berlín geothermal plant is being replaced by a more efficient one.

According to the report from Programa Energías Renovables y Eficiencia Energética en Centroamérica (GIZ), Unit 3, which came on line in 2007, consumes too much steam to generate 44 MW, its nameplate capacity. It uses some 22% more steam than the design value, equivalent to about 10 MW.
