Japan and European Union to Announce 350 MW Geothermal Power Development Project for Latin America (Nikkei Asian Review)

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will provide technical assistance to a geothermal power development project being launched in Latin America by Germany and the European Union.

The deal will be formally announced Monday by German Economic Cooperation and Development Minister Gerd Muller at a United Nations climate change conference in Lima, Peru.

Germany and the EU are creating a cooperative organization centered on a fund to assist 10 countries in Central and South America. The organization could be broadened in the future to cover Caribbean nations as well. It will involve more than $1 billion in funding and include tests at seven candidate sites in five countries, including Bolivia and Chile, with the aim of developing geothermal power plants offering a combined generating capacity of 350 MW.
