Kenya: GDC Revenue Rises 24.9% On Increased Geothermal Steam Sales

GDC profit drops to Sh287m on increased operating costs (The Star)


Geothermal Development Company's profit after tax for 12 months through June 2016 fell to Sh 287 million from Sh 1.6 billion the year before on increased operating expenses, the state-owned company said yesterday.

Revenue for the period, however, rose 24.9 per cent to Sh3.16 billion from Sh 2.53 billion on increased sale of geothermal steam.

GDC's future plans include boosting steam sales through the development of 1000 MW of geothermal power from three geothermal projects.

It has contracted three independent power producers through a competitive international open tender.

Chief executive Johnson Ole Nchoe said each of the three contracted firms will build and operate a 35 MW geothermal power plant for 25 years.

Grenada: More Funding for Geothermal Energy Project

The Board of Directors of the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) has approved a grant of USD 231,630 to the Government of Grenada to build its capacity for planning and implementation of its geothermal energy development roadmap. 


Tessa Williams-Robertson, Head of the Renewable Energy / Energy Efficiency Unit, CDB noted: “The grant will enhance the Government of Grenada’s own capacity to move realisation of its geothermal energy potential to the next level. Under CDB’s GeoSmart Initiative, appropriate resources have been mobilised and CDB is working with development partners to assist Eastern Caribbean countries in developing geothermal energy where the potential exists.”

USA, California: Community Choice Aggregators Expand Opportunities for Renewable Energy

Sonoma Clean Power, Marin’s MCE help lead fight against fossil-fueled energy grid (North Bay Business Journal)

As the demand for clean, renewable energy across the state increases, both Sonoma Clean Power and MCE, formerly Marin Clean Energy, are expanding their services.

Santa Rosa-based Sonoma Clean Power will begin serving Mendocino County in June, which will add 38,000 new customers to its existing 196,000 in Sonoma County.

In the North Bay, San Rafael-based MCE, with 255,000, customers, expanded into Napa last year.

Both clean-energy organizations are the “default electricity suppliers.” Both have agreements with PG&E to purchase electricity from clean sources like solar, wind, geothermal and hydropower from alternative sources, and feed it through PG&E’s wires to customers. PG&E also remains responsible for billing and maintenance to the system.

Toshiba Corporation and Ormat Technologies Inc. yesterday announced that the first unit of the Sarulla geothermal power plant, one of the world's largest power plants, located in Indonesia's North Sumatra, has commenced commercial operation.

The approximately 110 MW power plant, which combines flash and binary technologies to provide a high efficiency power plant and 100% reinjection of the exploited geothermal fluid, is operated by Sarulla Operations Ltd. (SOL). As participants in the project, Toshiba supplied the geothermal steam turbines and generators (STGs) for the flash systems, while Ormat provided the conceptual design of the Geothermal Combined Cycle Unit (GCCU) power plant and supplied its Ormat Energy Converter (OEC), which serve as the condensing units for the steam turbines and utilize the separated brine for maximum resource exploitation and maximum power output.

Canada: Member of Parliament Calls for Support of Geothermal Industry

Using abandoned oil wells for geothermal on Edmonton MPs federal budget 2017 wish list (Globalnews.ca)

Thousands of unemployed energy workers are looking to Wednesday’s federal budget hoping their jobs can be brought back to life, when and if abandoned oil wells are used again.

The change? The wells wouldn’t be used to drill for oil, but for drilling deep into the earth’s core.

Edmonton-Riverbend MP Matt Jeneroux has a private members motion on the order paper. M-122 calls for support for the geothermal industry in Canada.

He said the abandoned wells normally would have concrete pumped into them to cap them. Instead, Jeneroux has been working with the industry to have those orphaned wells converted to geothermal production.

Jeneroux said there is potential not only in Alberta, but in B.C. and Saskatchewan as well.

Netherlands: 16 MWth Direct Use Geothermal Heat Greenhouse Project

Energy Efficiency Needs “Historic Level of Public-Private Cooperation” (Energy Collective)

To give a concrete example of how public-private cooperation in enabling sustainable energy investments is beginning to manifest, a project supported by the European Commission’s JESSICA (Joint European Support for Sustainable Investment in City Areas) initiative had 70% of its total costs funded by a non-recourse project finance loan from ING.

The project, Nature’s Heat, is a direct use geothermal heat project comprising a 2.5km deep geothermal doublet (production well & injection well) and a heat processing and distribution network, expected to deliver 16 MWth heat to be used by its owners, a consortium of glasshouse horticulture businesses near The Hague in the Netherlands.

The growers expect to save 25% or more on heat costs compared with the current alternative supply from gas-fired boilers. Nature’s Heat will avoid the use of some 22 million m3 natural gas per year for at least 30 years, with a corresponding annual reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of 40,000 tonnes CO2 and 7,200 tonnes NOx. In addition the resulting competitive advantage and business resilience for the horticulture businesses will support job security and maintain social cohesion in the local community.

Alongside the equity investment from its owners and the project finance loan from ING, Nature’s Heat benefits from a subordinated loan from Energy Fund Den Haag (ED). ED is funded 40% by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the remaining 60% comes from the Government of the Netherlands, the Province of South Holland and the Municipality of The Hague. The Nature’s Heat project financing is a fine example of public-private cooperation at all levels.

It’s nearly ubiquitous throughout the planet but is particularly abundant in areas with a lot of geothermal activity and volcanic rock. Read: Nevada. The warm geothermal waters rising from the deep mix with the mineral-rich rocks, leaching out the lithium to form subterranean bodies of briny water.

Buoyed by Nevada’s enormous potential reserve of lithium and the opening of Tesla’s Gigafactory nearly 200 miles to the north, 25 mining companies and investor-backed speculators have staked more than 13,000 placer claims, covering almost the entirety of the Clayton Valley and 18 hydrographic basins.

Meanwhile, the price for a ton of lithium carbonate has more than tripled since 2015. According to Deutsche Bank, global demand for lithium carbonate in the next decade could double to 534,000 tons a year. Analysts predict that lithium carbonate could become a $1.7 billion market by 2019.

Climate Change: IRENA Suggests up to 283 GW of Geothermal to help Reduce CO2 Emissions

Perspectives for the energy transition: Investment needs for a low-carbon energy system (IRENA)

Global energy-related carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions can be reduced by 70% by 2050 and completely phased-out by 2060 with a net positive economic outlook, according to new findings released today by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).

The report uses a base of 12 GW of geothermal in 2015 and projects an increase to between 36 GW and 126 GW by 2030 and between 63 GW and 283 GW by 2050.


In the 66% 2°C Scenario, renewable energy technologies taken together would account for about 60% of CO2 emissions reduction to 2050 relative to the New Policies Scenario in the power sector (see figure above). Solar PV and wind power, in particular, extend well beyond the New Policies Scenario, each accounting for about one-fifth of the total CO2 emissions reduction from the power sector. The projections of the 66% 2°C Scenario build on recent momentum for solar PV and wind power technologies, namely driven by policy support and related cost reductions, but also due to their modular nature and short installation periods, which facilitate a rapid uptake.

Additional use of hydropower, bioenergy, geothermal and concentrated solar power (CSP) contributes further to emissions reductions. Nuclear and CCS-equipped power plants account for the remaining one-quarter of emissions reduction by 2050 in the 66% 2°C Scenario, compared with the New Policies Scenario. USA: Proposed Trump Budget Cuts Will Probably Not Slow the Momentum of Renewable Energy Installations

Here’s what Trump’s budget means for renewable energy (ARN)

No regulation adjustments or budget cuts will likely slow the adoption of renewable energy

The Trump administration on Thursday released a preliminary 2018 budget proposal outlining changes to discretionary spending that, if implemented, would likely cut spending on renewable energy.

Among a list of 15 government entities that would see cuts under the proposed budget, two that could affect renewable energy programs are the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Energy (DOE). Trump has proposed a 31% cut in spending for the EPA and a 6% cut for the Energy Department.

The budget proposal also seeks to cut funding for the DOE's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewables (which includes the Geothermal Technologies Office - GTO) and the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) and "takes a big axe to the EPA's budget," said Raj Prabhu, CEO of Mercom Capital Group, a clean energy research firm.

Even with the budget proposal, experts do not believe the momentum of renewable energy installations will slow down.

USA, California: Salton Sea Restoration Plan Could Be Big Opportunity for Geothermal Energy Development

California has a new $383 million plan for the shrinking Salton Sea (The Desert Sun)

Royalties from future geothermal energy development could help pay for restoration

After years of delays, California’s plans for the shrinking Salton Sea are finally starting to take shape.

A $383 million plan released by the state’s Natural Resources Agency on Thursday lays out a schedule for building thousands of acres of ponds and wetlands that will cover up stretches of dusty lakebed and create habitat for birds as the lake recedes.

The state’s blueprint focuses on constructing a patchwork of ponds that will spread out along the lake’s north and south shores during the next 10 years. Much of the funding has yet to be approved by the Legislature, and the construction projects will lag behind the pace of the sea’s decline, covering up only a portion of the vast expanses of lakebed that will be left dry and exposed to the desert winds.

The document includes some elements previously proposed by the Imperial Irrigation District and Imperial County in a 2015 plan, including a requirement that the canals and ponds will be built to ensure access to areas where new geothermal plants could be built near the south shore.

Assemblyman Eduardo Garcia, D-Coachella, praised the plan but said questions remain to be answered about the funding after the first four years and what role geothermal energy development could play as a funding source.

USA, West Virginia: Possible 14-18 MWe Geothermal Energy Could Power Camp Dawson

NETL looks at heating Camp Dawson with geothermal energy, Process could make Preston leader in alternative energy (The Preston County News & Journal)

Someday the buildings at Camp Dawson might be warmed by heat coming from deep inside the earth.

Last year, researchers from the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) in Morgantown, with help from West Virginia University and engineering consultant AECOM, completed a feasibility study at Camp Dawson. The West Virginia Army National Guard training center is sitting in a geothermal energy warm spot where it, along with many other places like it, would be possible to make 14-18 gigawatts of electricity. However, it may cost too much to make the power to run the base. Still, it may be possible to heat the buildings with geothermal energy.

Regardless, it could make Preston County a leader in the development of alternative energy.

Geologist-Designed Slim-Hole Tool: Interview with Daniel Flores (AAPG)

Interview with Daniel Flores, who lives and works in Peru, who has developed an innovative slim-hole drilling and sampling tool that can work in many settings.

I'm working on prototyping of pressure control system. The system works with sensors that anticipate the arrival on surface of variations in the mud density readings while drilling. In most cases these decrements are attributed to pressurized influx of oil or gas from geological formations traversed. In response, a protocol automatically activates valves located at flow line of mud, which can instantly increase the pressure in the borehole and thus counteract the pressure of formation without it being necessary incorporate additives to mud to achieve the same result.

Renewable energies are becoming increasingly competitive. Some countries have aligned themselves with short-term targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In this sense, this proposal has as secondary objective to cover the high demand within the geothermal industry which has as a challenge for its development the drilling of exploratory wells which represent the activity of greater investment and with a high risk on upstream.

GreenFire Energy Inc. today announced that it has been selected for a grant award from the California Energy Commission to build the world’s first demonstration of closed-loop geothermal power generation using supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO2) instead of water.

GreenFire Energy Inc.’s geothermal power generation process could enable thousands of megawatts of new carbon-free power plants in California and other markets. The proposed $1.48 million grant from the Energy Commission’s Geothermal Grant and Loan Program will be considered for approval by the Energy Commission at the June 14, 2017, Business Meeting.

GreenFire Energy Inc.’s innovative ECO2G™ technology harnesses recent advances in deep and directional drilling technologies from the oil and gas industry to access high-temperature geothermal resources that cannot be exploited with existing geothermal technology. The demonstration project involves inserting a co-axial closed-loop tube into an existing geothermal well that lacks sufficient permeability to generate power. Supercritical carbon dioxide will then be circulated to transfer heat to the surface and generate power from a small turbo expander.

USA, Nevada: One Remaining Coal-Fired Plant Left in State

Environmental advocates and members of an Indian tribe who live nearby hailed the closure Thursday of an embattled coal-fired NV Energy power plant 40 miles north of Las Vegas.

Officials from the state's dominant electric utility marked the occasion by flipping a transformer switch to disconnect the fourth and final unit of the Reid Gardner Generating Station near Moapa from the regional power grid. The first three units shut down in late 2014.

The closure leaves just one coal-fired generating station in the state — a plant that NV Energy co-owns near Valmy in northern Nevada. It is due to close by 2025.

NV Energy also plans by the end of 2019 to give up its 11.3 percent stake in the coal-fired Navajo Generating Station east of Page, Arizona. That plant is operated by Phoenix-based SRP.

NV Energy has shifted production since 2005 toward renewable sources, including 19 geothermal, 14 solar, six hydroelectric, one wind and several biomass and methane plants in Nevada, said Starla Lacy, company environmental services executive. She said carbon emissions have been cut 44 percent over the same period.

Many of the about 320 Moapa Paiute tribe members who live near Reid-Gardner complained for years about respiratory ailments. They blamed plant emissions and coal ash dust that advocates said contained high levels of mercury, arsenic, chromium, lead and other toxins.

Poland: Environmental Minister Says Geothermal is Superior to Wind and Solar

Minister says geothermal energy a ‘big chance’ for Poland (Decentralized Energy)

Poland’s Minister for the Environment Jan Szyszko believes a big solution towards his country’s energy dependence resides in its geothermal resources.

Szysko told a parliamentary conference that the resource is superior to wind and solar power as it does not suffer from intermittency.

“Geothermal Energy has its place in the Strategy for Responsible Development, which means that it will be supported by the government. The statement was made at a parliamentary conference “Geothermal energy impulse - development of the Polish economy”.

The country has been highly dependent on coal for decades but Szysko cites Professor Julian Sokolowski who stated that Polish geothermal resources far exceed its needs.

Why Chile's clean energy policy must transcend politics (Business News Americas)

Although Chile boasts some 3.5 GW of geothermal energy potential, the country to date has no geothermal capacity in operation and just one project under construction.

The technology's benefits – including plant factors above 90%, near-zero emissions, and useful plant lives of 50 years or more – are evident, according to Carlos Finat, executive director of Chile's renewable energy trade association Acera.

However, Chile lacks the necessary regulatory framework to promote geothermal development and provide peace of mind to would-be lenders.

To address this issue, the energy ministry in December launched the Mesa de Geotermia, a public-private initiative to better understand the opportunities and challenges facing the segment and fine-tune public policy accordingly.

Geothermal, along with other baseload renewable sources such as CSP solar and pumped-storage hydroelectricity, will allow renewables to replace Chile's aging thermoelectric fleet over the coming years, Finat said.

Forest Service proposes to OK geothermal lease (Idaho Mountain Express)

The U.S. Forest Service is proposing to grant a Nevada-based company the right to pursue geothermal energy production on a nine-square mile area near the confluence of the Salmon River and Panther Creek, about 20 miles northwest of the town of Salmon. However, space constraints imposed by environmental restrictions and an only moderately hot source of water are likely to pose obstacles to development of the site.

The initial 10-year lease to Ormat Technologies, a publicly held company headquartered in Reno, Nev., would confer only the exclusive right to develop the 10-20 megawatts geothermal resource. Prior to any ground-disturbing activities, the company would have to submit additional applications for exploration, development and use. However, the decision on the requested lease is based on a “reasonably foreseeable development scenario.”

The Forest Service is inviting public comments on the proposed lease. Comment deadline will be 45 days after publication in the Federal Register, expected for March 17. The draft EIS is available at www.fs.usda.gov/project/?project=37800.


USA, Texas: Plans for Crude Oil Refinery With Onsite Geothermal Plant

First major U.S. oil refinery in decades claims it will be ‘green’ with geothermal (Fusion)

A Houston-based company, Raven Petroleum, plans to build the largest new oil refinery in the United States in 40 years, and they say that they’re going “green.”

Raven Petroleum’s managing director, Christopher Moore, announced February that they will partner with Austin-based Thermal Energy Partners to build a 55,000 barrel-per-day crude oil refinery with an onsite geothermal plant on 832 acres in Duval County, just east of Laredo, Texas. The refinery will process sweet crude oil from Texas’s Eagle Ford Shale and export diesel, jet fuel, naphtha, gasoline, and liquefied petroleum products to Mexico via railway.

“This is going to be a near-net-zero emission, and we will not be burning any dry gas for our energy,” Moore told The San Antonio Express-News during a press conference. “We will be pulling that completely from the geothermal.”

A few more steps towards discovering Springhill’s fullest potential for its geothermal resource took place this week.

The Cumberland Energy Authority, a division of the Municipality of Cumberland County, issued a request for proposals [RFP] March 13th seeking tenders to review a spatial analysis of the mines flooded with water beneath Springhill and introduce a number of deep-well test boreholes.

The new boreholes will serve to monitor water temperatures, water quality and potentially more information on how water flows inside the mines. Long-term, those boreholes could eventually become future send and return wells as the municipality develops the geothermal resource further.

Science & Technology: New Engine Can be Used to Generate Geothermal Energy

Space-race technology revived to generate greener energy (physicsworld.com)

Thermionic energy conversion – a technology first developed in the 1950s to power spacecraft – could soon be significantly more efficient, thanks to two key innovations made by researchers in the US. The work is at an early stage, but the researchers believe that the technology could eventually produce electricity in situations where a traditional steam turbine would not be feasible. As well as making conventional power stations more efficient, the energy conversion could also lead to more environmentally friendly sources of electrical energy.

Team member Hongyuan Yuan says the device might eventually generate electricity from waste heat in the existing power infrastructure, reducing the amount of coal that needs to be burned, for example. It could also generate electricity from renewable sources such as geothermal or solar thermal energy, where a steam turbine would not be viable.

The Bacon-Manito Geothermal Project (BacMan) of Energy Development Corporation (EDC) donated three Philippine brown deer and four Javan/Australian deer to the Albay Park and Wildlife in time for the celebration of  World Wildlife Day (WWD) on March 3.

The seven deer are among the animals being bred and protected by EDC in its BacMan nursery and wildlife rescue center.

As part of the WWD celebration, the PGA, BacMan and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) also released five predatory birds in the BacMan geothermal reservation which is an identified Key Biodiversity Area in the region.  The celebration was held at the BacMan nursery and wildlife rescue center in Manito, Albay.

BacMan implements a comprehensive watershed management and biodiversity conservation and monitoring program including wildlife conservation which is enrolled under the DENR’s Adopt-A-Wildlife-Species (AAWS) program.

Through the program, EDC acts as the adopting entity of particular wildlife species throughout its five geothermal sites. In BacMan, special focus is given to the conservation of the Large Flying Fox, Golden Crowned Flying Fox, Philippine Warty Pig, Philippine Brown Deer and Philippine Eagle Owl.

Canada: Abandoned New Brunswick Mine Could Provide Geothermal Heating and Cooling for Community

What Geothermal Development Could Mean for Sussex (Huddle)

The Picadilly mine site near Sussex , New Brunswick, that suspended operations over a year ago could soon become a new source of energy and economic growth for the area.

As part of the Greater Sussex Hampton Region Economic Response Plan released earlier this month, geothermal energy development at the site is one of several priorities for economic growth in the area.

According to the Response Plan, the mine’s infrastructure could be repurposed to provide geothermal-based heating and/or cooling for high-demand application at a lower cost compared to other sources. Bill Thompson, economic development coordinator for the Town of Sussex says PotashCorp is on board with exploring this possibility.

“There is a great big cavern down there that’s 7 km long and it’s filling with water at the rate of about 1,400 gallons a minute. Potash[Corp] has been pumping that water out and either trucking to it Saint John or piping it out towards the Bay of Fundy,” Thompson says. “Now that they have gone through an [Environmental Impact Assessment] with the province, they no longer have to pump it out. It’s filling, so we’re looking at what that reservoir has to offer from a heat perspective.”

According to Athens-based PPC Renewable’s chief executive Manolis Panagiotakis, the development of geothermal technology is expected to play a pivotal role, while also pointing out the major prospects in this field for the Cyclades islands and, possibly, further south.

The energy supply model in the region promises to be reshaped, Panagiotakis noted, adding that geothermal technology, combined with other measures, could end the region’s high-cost dependence on fuel, diesel and mazut for electricity generation.

The PPC boss pointed out the utility’s unsuccessful investment of 62 million euros on geothermal technology research in previous decades, while adding that, despite the setback, he remains optimistic on the domain’s prospects for the Cyclades and possibly beyond.

Major foreign corporations, including Enel, Ormat and Mitsubishi, have expressed an interest in helping develop the country’s geothermal energy potential.

Why not geothermal energy on the grid for power in the Yukon? Scientific studies say the Tintina trench, near Ross River, is the hottest geothermal deposit in Canada. There is a possibility that 1700 MW of energy could be put on the grid which would help power proposed mines, railways etc.

There are geothermal plants on the grid all around the world, but none in Canada. There is lots of information indicating that developing geothermal energy is cheaper than other alternatives. It is a tax credit industry and can create many jobs like 24-hour greenhouses making food year round and even melt the snow on our roads.

United Kingdom: Opportunity for Deep Geothermal to Compete for Contracts for Renewable Projects

The United Kingdom Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) has published information on the next Contracts for Difference (CfD) round.

The round will open 3rd April. The strike price for geothermal starts at £140/MWh.

Under the CfD, low carbon electricity generators are incentivised for the power they produce. Companies are able to compete for an initial £290 million worth of contracts for renewable projects under the second round.

It will support “less established” technologies, including offshore wind, anaerobic digestion, biomass with CHP, advanced conversion technologies, wave, tidal and geothermal energy.

While Indonesia possesses around 40% of the world’s geothermal reserves, development has not accelerated to full gear due to insufficient incentives to make the high exploration risks worth taking.

The government has been offering incentives, but analysts says these are still not attractive enough for many developers.

Regulatory and administrative hiccups further deter developers from undertaking projects, which could end up creating setbacks for the country’s commitment to reduce carbon emissions by 29% by 2030.

Coal retirements around the country offer a unique opportunity to transition to a lower-emitting, more dynamic, cost-effective, and resilient electricity system
while delivering economic benefits to households and businesses. Expanding natural gas generation and supporting pipeline and compressor infrastructure would be a significant setback to efforts to achieve the ambitious emissions reductions needed to avoid dangerous climate change and would also expose American households and businesses to increased risk of price shocks and stranded assets.

Instead, all states can and should strengthen energy efficiency and renewable standards and associated clean energy investments. States should also engage in
smart planning and regulatory reform where necessary to facilitate investments in a more flexible grid.

The transition to clean energy is already in progress. As fossil fuels grow more obsolete, energy efficiency, renewable energy and a more integrated, responsive grid will move the nation toward a more affordable and reliable clean energy future.

Kenya: GDC Planning to Scale Up Partnership Model of Geothermal Development

GDC bets on partnerships to boost steam power generation (Daily Nation)

The Geothermal Development Company (GDC) is planning to scale up its partnership model of steam development for faster realisation of power generation from the underground source.

GDC, which has so far applied the approach in its geothermal power developments including the 105MW Menengai Phase I Project, said it remains a preferred method because it is faster, less capital intensive and shares risks between those involved.

Under the arrangement, the State-owned agency takes care of upfront risks, and then invites the private sector to construct power plants.

Update on the expansion of the geothermal reservoir at San Emidio II

Douglas Glaspey- President and Chief Operating Officer, US Geothermal: The significant increase and the size of the San Emidio II resource after the drilling and testing and completed in 2016, has changed our approach to this project. While we previously had planned on Phase II as 10 megawatt expansion, we’re now considering a 35 to 45 megawatt size development. Now, we would use those three power plants we own (USA, Idaho: U.S. Geothermal Inc. Acquires Three New Power Plant Units at Significant Discount - Global Geothermal News, Nov. 2015).

With a temperature of over 320 degrees Fahrenheit, this new resource is a perfect fit for these three power plants and most of the equipment is already stored on site at San Emidio. We received permits to deepen three more wells in the new resource area and are ready to proceed with drilling as soon as weather allows. Additionally, we had to decline the Small Generator Interconnection Agreement that we had received from NV Energy and will now be submitting a new application for a Large Generator Interconnection Agreement later this year.

Anything over 20 megawatts needs a different type of Interconnection Agreement. So now with this larger project, we do have to start over again there. And an application for project development of this larger facility will be submitted to the Bureau of Land Management this month to start the environmental assessment process to get approval to fully develop the well field and build the larger power plant at San Emidio.

USA: Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Could Be Eliminated - Report

Report: White House planning deep cuts to DOE efficiency, renewables office (Utility Dive)

More details on energy policy continue to trickle out of the White House, with Bloomberg reporting that an upcoming budget for the Department of Energy will cut $700 million or more from an office focused on clean energy technology.

Currently funded at $2.1 billion, three sources told Bloomberg that the budget of the  Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) - that includes the Geothermal Technologies Office (GTO), - will be cut between $700 million and $1.4 billion. 

Details on President Trump's plans for energy policy have been slowly emerging since reports surfaced in January the administration was considering massive budget cuts at DOE. Initial rumors included fully eliminating EERE, the Office of Fossil Energy, and the Office of Electricity.

Japan: Legislation Determines Purchase Price for Geothermal Energy for Three Years

Amendments to Japan's Renewable Energy Act (Lexology)

The Amendments provide for the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry to determine the applicable purchase price for geothermal projects for a consecutive three-year period, so as to facilitate potential developers in determining the profitability of any such potential renewable energy project.

On April 1, 2017, substantial portions of the Amendments to The Act on Special Measures Concerning the Procurement of Renewable Energy by Operators of Electric Utilities will become effective. These Amendments, enacted on June 3, 2016, represent the most comprehensive set of changes to Japan's feed-in tariff system since the implementation of the Act in 2012.

The Amendments reflect the efforts of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry to cause certified renewable energy facilities to meet certain feasibility criteria and to commence operation and power production within a specified period of time following certification.

These Amendments will also require owners of renewable energy facilities to enter into an interconnection agreement with the relevant utility before certification and will introduce a bidding process for determining the purchase price for power generated by large-scale solar projects.

In an effort to promote the development of renewable energy beyond solar power, these Amendments will provide for the fixing of the purchase price for three consecutive years following certification in the case of certain renewable energy projects (such as wind, geothermal, and biomass) that require several years and substantial cost to complete a feasibility study.
