Canada:

Direct-Use Geothermal Exploration Coming to BC (The Rocky Mountain Goat)

Over this coming winter, Geoscience BC will be gathering existing geothermal data on Valemount and other areas of the province. The aim is to help identify sites with economically feasible potential for geothermal direct-use applications, and potentially start a consortium to drill test holes to verify that potential.

Carlos Salas, professional geoscientist and Vice President of Oil and Gas for Geoscience BC, says the non-profit organization has been around for about 10 years. Its goal is to providing science to British Columbians so they can make informed decisions about resource development in the province. About three years ago, the board of directors thought they should start looking at geothermal energy.

New Technology Could Tap into Waste Geothermal Heat (St. George Daily Spectrum)

A small operation that could be about to go big is perched above downtown St. George at a makeshift test site off Red Hills Parkway.

Helidyne, an energy company that started six years ago when two brothers started tinkering in a garage with a little-known technology, is in the process of testing its patented power generators in preparation for its first major sale — four units headed to offshore oil platforms for Mexico’s state-owned Pemex, where they could replace diesel units that require expensive shipments of fossil fuels.

The company’s patented “planetary rotor expander” sounds like something out of Star Trek, but the idea is a fundamentally simple one. The generator, built into a box about the size of an economy car, takes in high-pressure gas and funnels it through a system of specially-designed rotors to generate electricity. The gas is then sent back out at a lower pressure, meaning the generators can be installed via a simple bypass loop and feed the gas back into the supply line.

The technology could eventually be used in an assortment of applications, utilizing hot water from geothermal power plants, hydraulic pressure from oil wells or natural gas along supply lines in places like Southern Utah. Every place where pressure along those lines is reduced, there is wasted energy that could be harnessed, Kevin Kerlin said.

Philippines:

Geothermal Energy Auctions Pushed Back to January (eco-business.com)

The Philippines government will postpone the open and competitive selection process (OCSP) for the 24 renewable energy resource areas that will be offered to local and international investors, an official from the Philippines Energy department said yesterday.

Mario C. Marasigan, director of the agency’s Renewable Energy Management Bureau, said the start of the auction process will be moved to January from today.

Last month, Mr. Marasigan said the Energy department will offer four geothermal and 10 hydropower sites for development and utilization.

Marasigan said that two of the sites are in Mindanao – one of which is the 40 MW Amakan geothermal field in Compostela Valley; and the other one is a smaller 20 MW prospect in Balut Island, Davao Occidental.

The third site is Cabalian in Southern Leyte; and the fourth is the Acupan-Itogon geothermal site in Benguet in Northern Luzon.

President Solis Opposes Geothermal in National Parks (Inside Costa Rica)

President Luis Guillermo Solis of Costa Rica
President Luis Guillermo Solis will not support geothermal energy generation in Costa Rica’s national parks during his time in office, calling such a measure unnecessary, the president announced last week during the latest roundtable discussions aimed at tackling high energy prices in the country.

Despite the president’s opposition, there are currently three bills making their way through the Legislative Assembly that aim to significantly expand geothermal energy production in the country, including inside national parks.

Geothermal Journalist Awarded EGU Science Journalism Fellowship (News Release)

Karl Urban will use prize money to report on the Iceland Deep Drilling Project

The European Geosciences Union (EGU) has named journalist Karl Urban as one of the winners of its 2015 Science Journalism Fellowship. He will be awarded €2,500 for his journalism project reporting on obtaining a new kind of geothermal energy.

Urban will report on efforts to access a different type of energy resource, obtained near active volcanoes. In 2008, when the Iceland Deep Drilling Project team drilled their first borehole to tap into geothermal energy at depths of more than 4,000 meters, they inadvertently drilled into a magma reservoir at 2,100 meters. Despite that, the project was considered a success as the scientists and engineers were able to supply heat directly from the molten magma for a few months. As they plan to drill another hole in south-western Iceland, Urban will follow them to report on the difficulties and consequences of tapping into magma energy.

Urban is a science journalist in Germany specializing in geoscience and space science reporting. He works for radio stations, online magazines and newspapers, including Deutschlandfunk, Spektrum.de and Neue Zürcher Zeitung.

Philippines:

MGI Gearing Up to Expand Batangas Geothermal Plant (BusinessWorld Online Edition)

Maibarara Geothermal, Inc. (MGI) wants to expand its 20 MW power plant in Batangas, an official from the Energy department said yesterday.

“MGI is looking at initially 10 MW. Everything is being put in place,” Mario C. Marasigan, director of the agency’s Renewable Energy Management Bureau, told reporters in a text message.

Mr. Marasigan said MGI has begun an onsite resource assessment in preparation for an expansion.

“They are looking whether they will use the existing well or drill a new one,” he said.

The official said it will take another two years before the planned expansion goes into commercial operation.

USA, Oregon:

The Dream Becomes Real: Touring the Newberry Enhanced Geothermal Site (Renewable Energy World)

Tucked away in remote Oregon, the AltaRock Newberry EGS project has been shrouded in rumors and secrecy, but a recent tour of the facility revealed that the technology is very much real and making great strides.

On a crisp fall day in late-September, three white vans crept up a winding Oregon dirt road lined with thick forestry. The pitted, unwelcoming path made for a rough ride — a likely indicator that many don’t often brave the ride to the top of the crater.

Finally, the famed enhanced geothermal system (EGS) research project that has been shrouded in mystery and rumor would be revealed to the 20 geologists, engineers and students attending the 2014 Geothermal Resources Council Annual Meeting and Geothermal Energy Association Expo in Portland, Oregon.

Saint Lucia:

Accelerating Saint Lucia`s Geothermal Resource Development Project (Caribbean News Service)

The Ministry of Sustainable Development, Energy, Science and Technology this week hosted a delegation of technical experts from the World Bank, the United Kingdom (UK) Department for International Development (DFID) and the New Zealand Government who were here to advance the Saint Lucia Geothermal Resource Development Project.

On Wednesday, the teams from the World Bank and the New Zealand Government made presentations to Permanent Secretaries and senior government officials from a number of key Ministries who will be integrally involved in facilitating the geothermal development.

So far, a combined total of US$2.8 million in financial and technical assistance grants have been invested into the geothermal project by the the World Bank and the New Zealand Government, with supplementary funding of US$1 million from Saint Lucia`s Global Environment Facility (GEF) allocation`s fifth disbursement .

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Energy, Science and Technology received the signed contracts for the GEF and Small Island Developing States Renewable Energy project (SIDS DOCK) grants on Wednesday and these will be forwarded to the Prime Minster for his signature.

Indonesia:

Sumitomo to Build Geothermal Power Plant in North Sulawesi (Nikkei Asian Review)


Sumitomo Corp. has won an order to construct Units 5 and 6 at the Lahendong geothermal steam field in Indonesia, with completion targeted for 2017.

Awarded by a geothermal subsidiary of state-owned oil company Pertamina, the project in North Sulawesi is worth roughly 10 billion yen ($84.2 million), and will be jointly undertaken with major Indonesian engineering firm Rekayasa Industri. Two 20 MW electricity generation units will be installed, with Fuji Electric providing both steam turbines and power generators.

Sumitomo has so far undertaken 10 geothermal construction projects in Indonesia. With the latest order included, Sumitomo-built power stations together will generate 820 MW, more than half the country's geothermal electricity output.

Every Watt Matters: Geothermal and COP20 (BID)

Latin America and the Caribbean leads the world in renewable energy. Hydropower makes up 60% of the generation matrix.  Still, there is vast untapped potential for low-carbon energy development. During my current trip to the COP20 in Lima, Peru, I had a chance to focus on the long-established source of renewable energy that has yet to reach its full potential: geothermal in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The Geothermal Development Facility launched this week at COP20 in Lima is designed to lower similar barriers to entry. The facility addresses risk-taking, capacity building and mobilization of private capital. It utilizes international collaboration and cross-sector collaboration between private and public players.

Doing nothing is no longer an option. Power generation in the region cannot keep pace with growing demand. An emerging middle class and record-level urbanization continue to make the current energy matrix unsustainable. Renewable energy sources like geothermal, coupled with energy efficiency measures, is a must.

The stakes are high. With the right financial instruments and risk-mitigation strategies, geothermal offers great promise. To effectively curb the trend of climate change, we must explore every avenue in geothermal development. Every watt matters. Hopefully we can all return from Lima with a similar sentiment of urgency and commitment and take swift action.

Ormat Technologies Will Also be Listed in Tel Aviv (Globes)

In addition to the TASE, Ormat will also be registered on a third stock exchange, and the company board is currently weighing possibilities in European and Far Eastern stock exchanges. 


Ormat Technologies Inc. is expected to register for trading on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange (TASE), following the completion of its merger with Ormat Industries Ltd.

Ormat controlling shareholders FIMI Opportunity Funds  and the Bronicki family are going ahead with a merger between Ormat Industries, already listed on the TASE, and Ormat Technologies. It was initially thought that the TASE was "losing" Ormat Industries, which will be delisted, but the company has now announced that its board of directors plans to register Ormat Technologies shares on the TASE. The company reportedly hopes that Ormat will enter the Tel Aviv 25 Index.

California Energy Commission Confirms Calpine Grant to Study Flexibility Enhancements at The Geysers

The California Energy Commission (CEC) today agreed to a resolution approving Agreement EPC-14-002 with Geysers Power Company LLC (The Geysers) for a $3,000,000 grant to investigate the methods, risks and costs associated with flexibly operating the Geysers geothermal plants to facilitate the integration of other intermittent renewable resources onto the grid in support of California's energy and greenhouse gas reduction goals.

Calpine will match the grant award, which will fund a study to investigate how generation at The Geysers may be modified to enhance flexibility and address the greater demands imposed on the grid by intermittent renewables.

Most countries joining the growing list of nations pursuing clean geothermal power have been confronted with a huge financial challenge.

But the director-general of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Adnan Z. Amin, said efforts by his organisation to “double renewable energy” and encourage investors have been paying off, including a new effort to promote geothermal in Latin America.

“We have new financing models that are de-risking investment and lowering the cost of capital, which has historically been a barrier to renewable energy,” Amin told IPS, citing financing through green bonds as one recent innovation for renewable energy investment.

Philippines:

Green Core Geothermal Signs Power Sales Agreement (Visayan Daily Star)

The Negros Oriental 2 Electric Cooperative and Green Core Geothermal Inc. (GCGI), a subsidiary of  Energy Development Corporation (EDC), will sign an amended Power Sales Agreement at the Noreco 2 office in Dumaguete City tomorrow, to ensure stable supply in the franchise areas of the electric cooperative.

Earlier, an official said that Noreco 2 was negotiating with the GCGI for additional power that he projected will be finalized next year. He also lauded the Energy Development Corporation, a sister company of GCGI, for its new 49.8 MW Nasulo geothermal plant in Valencia, Negros Oriental, that was inaugurated and became operational in September.

The new plant will ensure ample supply of electricity in the province, and will provide additional power in the Visayas grid, Macahig said.

GCGI operates the 112.5-MW Tongonan geothermal plant in Leyte and the 192.5-MW Palinpinon geothermal plants in Negros Oriental.

United Kingdom:

New Legislation Will Allow Underground Access Rights for Energy Companies Extracting Geothermal Energy (GeoDrilling International)

Draft legislation currently before the UK parliament proposes some significant changes to existing trespass laws to facilitate the development and growth of the geothermal and shale-gas industries in the UK.

The UK government’s Infrastructure Bill 2014-15, which had its third hearing in the House of Lords on November 19, 2014, contains provisions granting deep-level underground access rights for energy companies seeking to extract gas, oil or geothermal energy.

The proposed new legislation (which will not apply to Northern Ireland) will allow for geothermal energy exploration, drilling and extraction and will represent a significant shift from the current cumbersome regime for gaining access to subterranean assets.

Rwanda, Kenya:

Rwanda to Import 30 MW of Electricity from Kenya in 2015 (Reuters Africa)

The project aims to build a 400 kV electricity line running from Olkaria, where Kenya is expanding geothermal power production


Kenya will sell 30 MWe to Rwanda in 2015 to cater for the smaller nation's growing demand for power, Kenya Power said in a statement.

The power will be transmitted through a new high voltage line linking the two nations via Uganda. The project aims to build a 400 kilovolt (kV) electricity line running from Olkaria, where Kenya is expanding geothermal power production, via Uganda to Birembo in Rwanda.

Uganda and Kenya are already connected by older lines. The latest project will add new sections.

Kenya:

KenGen Connects all 280 MW of Olkaria Geothermal to the National Grid (News Release)

The entire 280 MW of Olkaria geothermal power has been connected to the national grid by the Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) with the completion of Olkaria I Unit 5.

The company says that grid reliability tests are being undertaken and will be completed by the end of this month.

The 280 MW project comprises Olkaria IV (140 MW) commissioned by President Uhuru Kenyatta in October and Olkaria 1 additional units 4 and 5 (each unit 70 MW).

“With the implementation of the 280 MW Olkaria geothermal project now behind us, we are focused on the next phase which includes the implementation of 350 MW comprising Olkaria I, Olkaria V and Olkaria VI projects,” said KenGen Chief Executive Officer Albert Mugo.

New Zealand:

Geothermal Powers Ahead of Gas (New Zealand Herald)

Big breakthrough for renewable generation as sector makes progress toward 2025 target.

Geothermal has pipped gas generation in New Zealand for the first time as more plants come on stream. Electricity Authority figures show for the year ended October 30 geothermal generation accounted for 16.3 per cent of the total and gas 15.8 per cent. The percentage of renewable generation had grown from 65 per cent in 2008 to 79 per cent in the year to June.

Mighty River Power generates around 55 per cent of geothermal power. Its chief executive Fraser Whineray said the rise of geothermal from fourth to second was significant for the country.

"It's a great achievement for New Zealand to see hydro and geothermal at the front of the grid for the first time," he said.

"Geothermal is the only true baseload renewable energy so a country not capitalizing on it would be mad." said Contact Energy Chief executive Dennis Barnes.

Biliran Geothermal on Track for 2016 Operations (BusinessWorld Online Edition)

Biliran Geothermal, Inc. (BGI)’s 50 MW power plant is on track to enter commercial operations in 2016, an official from the Philippines Department of Energy (DoE) said yesterday.

Mario C. Marasigan, director for Renewable Energy Management Bureau, said BGI has already sought the agency’s green light to proceed with the project.

“BGI has declared commerciality. We are currently evaluating their declaration,” Mr. Marasigan told reporters on the sidelines of a solar project inauguration in Manila.

“Once confirmed by the DoE, it can proceed with construction. It is still projected to be completed by 2016,” he added.

The official said initial resource estimates of BGI showed that the steam in the concession area can support a 40-50 MW power plant.

IRENA Launches a New Renewable Energy News Resource

In the context of the meetings of the Conference of the Parties (COP 20), currently in progress in Lima, Peru, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) has launched a multimedia online platform called the IRENA Newsroom, a new blog about renewable energy and the Agency.

This week, the Newsroom will feature posts about IRENA’s participation in COP 20, schedules, articles, and information about the role of renewables in mitigating climate change. Moving forward, the Newsroom will continue to highlight the Agency's events, work, insights and announcements.

Kenya:

Akiira One Project Inches Closer to Sh27bn Plant Approval (Business Daily Africa)

Akiira One, a geothermal power producer partly owned by Centum Investments, says it is in the final stages of obtaining approvals for a Sh27.1 billion 70 MW plant.

The firm said it is waiting forthe Kenyan Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) to approve a contract with distributor Kenya Power. The agreement is expected to spell out the price of power generated from the Olkaria-based plant.

Akiira One is jointly owned by listed Centum and Frontier Investment Management, a Danish investment firm. Ram Energy, Inc. and Marine Power will construct the power plant. Ram Energy, Inc. said the form of financing where agencies such as OPIC pay for early and risky stages of development should attract other American firms to put up plants in the Rift Valley area.

Akiira One will add another 70 MW by December 2018, bringing the total to 140 MW over the next four years.

USA, Oregon:

$1.5M Available for Renewable Energy Projects in Oregon (Daily Journal of Commerce)

The Oregon Department of Energy has opened its window for applications for $1.5 million in grant money for renewable energy production projects in the state.

The competitive review system applies to renewable energy production systems that use biomass, solar, geothermal, hydroelectric, wind, landfill gas, biogas or wave, tidal or ocean thermal energy technology to produce electrical energy.

The state hopes the grants, which are being offered through a Renewable Energy Grant program, will encourage a range of development. For example, projects can receive points for location in low-density areas that suffer from high unemployment rates. They also can gain points for technological resource diversity.

El Salvador:

Enel to Sell  LaGeo Stake (Bloomberg)

Italian power company Enel will sell its 36% stake in geothermal energy group LaGeo to the El Salvadoran government for $280m, citing an agreement between Enel and El Salvador.

Enel filed for international arbitration in 2008 after it was denied a $100m purchase for control of LaGeo. LaGeo, founded in 1999, generates 23% of El Salvador’s electricity, according to the company website.

Saskatchewan Company Collaborates With US Department of Energy on Metal Extraction From Geothermal Brines (News Release)

Star Minerals Group Ltd., headquartered in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, has announced it has signed a multi-party agreement to participate in a research project aimed at recovering rare earth elements, precious metals and other critical materials from geothermal brines using advanced sorbent structures.

The research is being managed by Pacific Northwest National Laboratories located in Richland, Washington with the majority of project funding coming from the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) and including project partners Barr Engineering Co. of Minneapolis, MN and the University of Oregon, Eugene OR.

The objective of the program is to evaluate, develop and demonstrate flexible, scalable mineral extraction technology for geothermal brines based upon solid phase sorbent materials.

Philippines:

Maibarara Geothermal Power Plant Expansion to Get Funded (BusinessWorld Online Edition)

Petroenergy Resources Corp. is poised to conduct a stock rights offer early next year to fund project expansions. The listed company said in a disclosure that its board of directors approved a stock rights offering (SRO) in a Dec. 5 meeting.

“We intend to do the SRO by the first quarter of next year,” Arlan P. Profeta, PetroEnergy’s head of Corporate and Legal Affairs, said in a mobile phone message reply when asked for details.

The exact amount and other details of the planned SRO will be disclosed at a later date, said Mr. Profeta.

Mr. Profeta said the decision to both conduct an SRO and increase the capital stock were “brought about by the need for funding in order for the company to finance its share” in various projects including additional capacity for the 20 MW Maibarara geothermal power plant.

The company -- through PetroGreen Energy Corp. (PGEC) -- has a 65% interest in Maibarara Geothermal, Inc., the owner and operator of the 20 MW geothermal plant in Sto. Tomas, Batangas. In the pipeline is a 10 MW expansion of the geothermal plant.

Kenya:

KenGen Seeks Bids for Design, Construction of 210 MW Geothermal Power Projects (Reuters Africa‎)

Kenya Electricity Generating Co (KenGen) is seeking bids for the design and construction of two geothermal power plants with capacity totaling 210 MW. The plants will be built in the Olkaria steam field, state-owned KenGen said on Tuesday.

KenGen said one of the projects will involve the construction of a 140 MW Olkaria V power plant and another 70 MW plant in Olkaria I unit 6.

The company, which is 70 percent state-owned, said it was in talks with development institutions to borrow money for the 140 MW plant, which it planned to build first.

Philippines:

Typhoon Hagupit Causes Little Damage - EDC

Energy Development Corporation (EDC) reports that Typhoon Hagupit passed by Leyte and Bicol regions with little effect on its geothermal power plants, EDC personnel and the local inhabitants.

The following is taken from a disclosure to the Philippines Securities and Exchange Commission:

We advise the Exchange that Energy Development Corporation has been monitoring the movement of Typhoon Ruby (International Name: Hagupit) as it moves towards the country. As of 12:00 pm of December 8, 2014, EDC notes the following:

  • All EDC employees in Bacman are safe and accounted for. We are working hard to account for all employees in Leyte but so far no casualties have been reported. 
  • All of EDC’s Leyte and Bacman geothermal steamfield facilities and power plants are intact based on visual inspection. 
  • The cooling towers, which in previous extreme weather events have been the most severely affected, are all intact. 
  • Transformers have been energized, thereby confirming grid connections for all our UL power plants and the Bacman power plant. 
  • UL is now already generating at 54% of the pre-typhoon levels. Tongonan in Leyte and Bacman in Bicol are undergoing very thorough pre-operation checks for debris and others prior to return to service. 
  • Our very own Disaster Prevention and Response Teams assisted in the evacuation of in excess of 1,200 people in Leyte, mostly residents from the community who live in homes made of light materials. The residents were allowed to seek shelter in school buildings sponsored by EDC's Community Partnerships program, the Schools For Excellence and the KEITECH Technical Vocational School. 
  • 27 Tons of relief goods (good for approximately 220,000 1-person meals) pre-packed in Manila have been sent by the company to the evacuation centers of our host communities in Bacon Manito project, where rains continue to be heavy.
  • Similar relief goods pre-packed by our Negros Island Business Units and Cebu trading office will be dispatched as soon as sea going landing craft travel is allowed.

EDC extends its sympathies to everyone adversely affected or threatened by the still-raging Typhoon Ruby. Relief operations have been initiated to assist the communities hosting and surrounding our projects, in the hope of helping ease the burden brought by the calamity.

Geothermal Development Facility for Latin America is Launched

Aims to develop geothermal power plants offering a combined generating capacity of 350 MW



The Geothermal Development Facility (GDF) for Latin America was officially launched today at the COP20 Sustainable Innovation Forum in Lima, Peru. Twelve development and financial institutions are participating in the organization, including the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the World Bank and the Inter-American Development Bank. The agencies will work to improve policy frameworks necessary for promoting development in such countries as Costa Rica, Bolivia, Ecuador, Peru and Colombia. They will also cultivate human resources and provide technology related to operating and maintaining geothermal facilities.

The project is intended to help stop global warming by introducing geothermal power as a base-load power source in Latin America, where power demand is rising accompanying economic growth and is projected to double by 2030. It will involve more than $1 billion in funding and include tests at seven candidate sites in five countries, including Bolivia and Chile, with the aim of developing geothermal power plants offering a combined generating capacity of 350 MW.

Turkey:

Banks Line Up for Major Turkish Geothermal Deal (IJ Global)

Debt is taking shape for the $970 million 123.3 MW Efeler geothermal development in Turkey, with financial close mooted for mid-2015.

Gurmat Elektrik formed in 1999 to construct and operate a set of geothermal power plants on the Germencik geothermal field in Western Anatolia. The first plant – the 47.4 MW Germencik – has been in operation since 2009. The concession area is 28 km2 with the operational plant occupying the northern part and southernmost quarter, and the expansion the remaining sections.

Construction on the plant is already underway, and it is expected to enter commercial operation in June 2015. Once operational it will feed electricity into Turkey's growing national grid.

Powerful Typhoon Hagupit nears Philippines (BBC News)

Storm could hit Leyte Province where Typhoon Haiyan damaged Energy Development Corp.(EDC)’s four major plants in its geothermal production field a year ago


Tens of thousands of people have sought shelter as the powerful Typhoon Hagupit heads towards the Philippines.

Hagupit, known locally as Ruby, has gusts of up to 230km/h (143mph) and is due to hit land on Saturday evening.

It is on course for the Eastern and Northern Samar provinces and the city of Tacloban, where thousands were killed by Typhoon Haiyan a year ago.

Pagosa Springs Geothermal Project Gets $2 Million Grant (Pagosa Springs Sun)

The Pagosa Area Geothermal Water and Power Authority (PAGWPA) met Monday morning to formally accept a grant for nearly $2 million from the Colorado Department of Local Affairs (DOLA).

According to the grant agreement, DOLA will give PAGWPA $1,986,000 from the Energy and Mineral Impact Assistance Fund “to confirm the presence of geothermal resources whereby such geothermal resources can be developed as a possible power source for the area.”

According to the contract, PAGWPA “will hire a contractor (Pagosa Waters) to perform exploratory geothermal well drilling and data analysis for confirmation of geothermal resources in Archuleta County using on-site exploration, testing and analysis.”

Japan and European Union to Announce 350 MW Geothermal Power Development Project for Latin America (Nikkei Asian Review)

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will provide technical assistance to a geothermal power development project being launched in Latin America by Germany and the European Union.

The deal will be formally announced Monday by German Economic Cooperation and Development Minister Gerd Muller at a United Nations climate change conference in Lima, Peru.

Germany and the EU are creating a cooperative organization centered on a fund to assist 10 countries in Central and South America. The organization could be broadened in the future to cover Caribbean nations as well. It will involve more than $1 billion in funding and include tests at seven candidate sites in five countries, including Bolivia and Chile, with the aim of developing geothermal power plants offering a combined generating capacity of 350 MW.

More than $4 Million Revenue From Geothermal Production on Fed Land is Disbursed (ONRR)

Counties in California received $2,657,177 and those in Nevada received $1,138,109.


The U.S. Department of the Interior’s Office of Natural Resources Revenue (ONRR) has announced that more than $2.2 billion was disbursed to 36 states, counties and political subdivisions as part of the state share of Federal revenues collected in Fiscal Year 2014 from energy and mineral production that occurred on Federal lands within their borders, and offshore on the Outer Continental Shelf.

Included in the state disbursements is $4,087,527 disbursed directly to individual counties in eight states from geothermal energy production. Counties in California received $2,657,177 and those in Nevada received $1,138,109 of the total.

Uganda:

UN to Assist Uganda Tap its Geothermal Potential (StarAfrica.com)

The newly created United Nations body on climate, the Climate Technology Center Network (CTCN) has expressed interest in supporting Uganda to fully tap its idle geothermal potential.
Speaking Friday at the ongoing UN Climate Change Conference in Lima, Peru officials from CTCN said Uganda is among the nine countries in the world that have sought their technical assistance in setting up geothermal power generation areas in some parts of the country.

According to reports, CTCN director Jukka Usukainen said the body had sent experts to advise Uganda on how to undertake the geothermal project. Jukka said much of Uganda’s geothermal potential has not been exploited over the years due to lack of expertise on the required technology.

The UN support comes as a backup to some US companies like AEE Systems which have already signed agreements to start geothermal energy explorations in Uganda.

Uganda’s untapped geothermal potential is estimated at 400 MW.

New Videos to Help Improve Energy Literacy Throughout the Nation (EERE)

As America switches to renewable energy sources and embraces energy-saving technologies to confront the threat of climate change, it’s more important than ever for citizens to understand the nature and role of energy in the world. The Energy Department is committed to improving energy literacy throughout the nation, and to providing educators with resources and tools to help achieve this goal.



As part of its energy literacy efforts, the U.S. Energy Department’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) partnered with the American Geosciences Institute (AGI)’s Center for Geoscience and Society and the National Center for Science Education (NCSE) to produce a series of new videos.

The videos focus on the seven essential principles and fundamental concepts established in EERE’s Energy Literacy Framework, an interdisciplinary approach to teaching and learning about energy. The video series highlights all seven energy literacy principles, starting with the first four:
  1. Energy is a physical quantity that follows precise natural laws.
  2. Physical processes on Earth are the result of energy flow through the Earth system.
  3. Biological processes depend on energy flow through the Earth system.
  4. Various sources of energy can be used to power human activities, and often this energy must be transferred from source to destination.
The first four videos launched today. They can be used as educational tools in the classroom and are intended for all ages. Videos about the remaining three energy literacy principles are expected by next summer. Watch the first four energy literacy videos now.

In addition to the energy literacy videos, EERE provides other educational resources that help educators incorporate energy into the classroom. These include K-12 lesson plans that help educators teach students about energy, energy basics web content that clearly explains how renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies work, and short, informative Energy 101 videos that describe the fundamental concepts behind clean energy technologies. There are also fun activities such as the Get Current coloring book, which is now available in Spanish.
