Science & Technology: Fuel Made from Carbon Dioxide

Accidental discovery could be renewable energy breakthrough (CBS News)

In an unexpected twist of fate, scientists at the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory have developed a process to turn carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, into ethanol fuel — a breakthrough with implications for the future of renewable energy.

That discovery, which occurred in 2014 and has been replicated multiple times since then in the nanotechnology lab Oak Ridge, Tennessee, is explained in full in a new study published in ChemistrySelect.

Specifically, the team says it used a catalyst made of carbon, copper and nitrogen and applied voltage to trigger a complex chemical reaction that essentially reverses the combustion process. With the help of the nanotechnology-based catalyst, the solution of carbon dioxide, dissolved in water, becomes ethanol.

New Zealand: Electricity from Geothermal Energy Breaks New Record

Electricity from renewables exceeds 80 per cent for fifth quarter (Voxy)

New Zealand’s share of electricity generated from renewables grew to 83.4 per cent in the June quarter 2016, the latest energy data released by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) shows.

The proportion of electricity generated from renewables was up 1.6 per cent from the same quarter last year.

The figures, released in MBIE’s latest New Zealand Energy Quarterly, show that geothermal electricity generation increased 1.3 per cent from the previous June quarter, overtaking the record level set in the March quarter this year.

Indonesia: Sales Negotations for Chevron Geothermal Assets to Begin in November

Six companies pass binding bid for Chevron Indonesia geothermal assets (Rambu Energy)

Indonesia’s Directorate General for New, Renewable and Energy Conservation (EBTKE) at the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry (ESDM) has disclosed that six companies have passed the binding bid over the auction of 610 MW of geothermal energy assets owned by Chevron Indonesia.

The six companies are Marubeni Corporation, Star Energy, Mitsui & Co Ltd, Medco Energi, PT Pertamina and PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN). The six companies were selected out of 44 interested parties.

“The final decision on this transaction is targeted to be completed in December 2016,” said Director for Geothermal at the EBTKE Yunus Saeefulhak. He said the auction over the Chevron Indonesia assets is now entering the 5th phase.

The next phase is the sales and purchase negotations between Chevron Indonesia and the potential bidders, which will be done in November.

Nicaragua: Inter American Development Bank to Help Geothermal Exploration in Cosigüina

Nicaragua, el país centroamericano con mayor potencial geotérmico, anunció este miércoles que ampliará la exploración en el volcán Cosigüina, con un préstamo de 51 millones de dólares del Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo (BID).

El Cosigüina está ubicado en la península del mismo nombre en el extremo noroeste del país, frente al Golfo de Fonseca, en el Océano Pacífico.

Nicaragua, the Central American country with the largest geothermal potential, said Wednesday it will expand exploration in the Cosigüina volcano,  with a loan of 51 million dollars from the Inter American Development Bank (IDB).

Cosigüina is located on the peninsula of the same name in the northwest corner of the country, facing the Gulf of Fonseca in the Pacific Ocean.

The IGA is looking for an Executive Director from the beginning of 2017. The position is based at the IGA Secretariat in Bochum, Germany.

The International Geothermal Association (IGA) operates its secretariat in Bochum, Germany. The IGA-secretariat is part of the International Knowledge- and Technology Platform Geothermal Energy that is hosted by the International Geothermal Centre (GZB) and is administrated by the Bochum University of Applied Sciences.

The Executive Director is responsible for the operation for the IGA secretariat and of the International Knowledge- and Technology Platform Geothermal Energy. The project is funded by the State of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) via EFRE (European Fund for Regional Development).

The International Geothermal Association (IGA), founded in 1988, is a scientific, educational and cultural organization, established to operate worldwide. It has more than 5,000 members in 65 countries. The IGA is a non-political, non-profit, non-governmental organization in special consultative status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations, and Partner of the European Union for the Campaign for Take Off (CTO) of Renewable Energies. About a mile beneath the Earth’s surface in an old gold mine, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) scientists have built an observatory to study how rocks fracture. The knowledge they gain could ultimately help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and accelerate deployment of clean energy technologies.

The observatory is part of a Department of Energy (DOE) initiative that seeks to address challenges associated with the use of the subsurface for energy extraction and waste storage. Dubbed SubTER—or Subsurface Technology and Engineering Research, Development and Demonstration Crosscut—the initiative recognizes that the United States currently relies on the subsurface for more than 80 percent of its energy needs and that adaptive control of subsurface fractures and fluid flow is a crosscutting challenge that has the potential to transform energy production and waste storage strategies.

One key to gaining control is understanding how rocks fracture, in order to control it or prevent it, depending on the application. “We’re concerned with the ability of fluids to move through cracks and pores,” said Berkeley Lab geologist and GRC Member Patrick Dobson. “For some applications, such as engineered geothermal systems, you want fluids to move in order to mine the heat from the subsurface, so you want to create fractures. In others, such as carbon capture and sequestration, we’re more interested in making sure fractures don’t grow.”

With many considering geothermal energy as Cornell seeks to reach its ambitious goal of carbon neutrality by 2035, several experts weighed in on the feasibility of relying on the energy source at a panel Monday, using Iceland as an example.

Geothermal energy utilizes heat stored within the Earth, such as hot water, gases or rocks located beneath the Earth’s surface. This energy is renewable and environmentally friendly, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

Thorleikur Johannesson, an engineer with over 20 years of experience working with geothermal energy in Iceland, said the energy source is an important resource for the country and is utilized by many of its citizens.

USA, Nevada: Stillwater Hybrid Geothermal Solar Power Plant

This Hybrid Power Plant Combines 3 Clean Energy Sources in One (DOE)


Champagne and strawberries, chocolate and peanut butter, geothermal and solar energy -- some things just go nicely together. Enel Green Power North America’s Stillwater plant, outside the desert town of Fallon, Nevada, came online in 2009 as a conventional geothermal plant and later added solar panels. After adding concentrating solar power in 2016, it became the world’s first triple hybrid renewable energy plant.

Engineers at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Idaho National Laboratory and National Renewable Energy Laboratory are helping analyze the integration of the geothermal plant with the newer additions.

Many renewable energy sources, including geothermal energy, experience fluctuations in power output -- a perhaps surprising fact given that geothermal energy draws upon ever-present heat from deep in the earth. The fluctuations stem from the system’s difficulty discarding heat on hot days.

California to Host Ultimate Geothermal Energy Event Next Week (News Release)

In less than a week, from October 23-26, the geothermal event of the year - the 40th GRC Annual Meeting and GEA GEOEXPO+ - will take place in the City of Trees: Sacramento, CA. Geothermal leaders, developers, and exhibitors will come together to exchange expertise and take part in sessions geared towards geothermal development, education, and expanding opportunities at home and abroad.

The GRC Annual Meeting will feature over 40 hours of technical presentations, posters, workshops, fieldtrips, a plenary session, networking events and more. The GRC Opening Session on Monday morning, October 24 will feature distinguished speakers in geothermal energy and legislation, from California, the U.S. and from around the world.

The GRC Annual Meeting this year supports the theme "Geothermal Energy - Here and Now: Sustainable, Clean, Flexible" highlighting the important role and values of geothermal energy today. The event will bring together geothermal companies, academics, financiers, policy leaders, students, and other individuals to attend or exhibit at the event, to be held from October 23-26 at the Sacramento Convention Center, Sacramento, California, USA.

Attendees who register online for the GRC Annual Meeting before midnight on Saturday pay $945 as Geothermal Resources Council (GRC) members or $1095 if non-members. The non-member registration includes GRC membership through 2017. After Saturday, October 22 the rate increases by $50.

Commonwealth of Dominica: Government Funds Geothermal Energy Development

Gov’t allocates US$15M towards geothermal development (Dominica Vibes)

Fifteen million US dollars has been set aside to develop the island’s geothermal resource, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has announced.

Mr Skerrit, who made this disclosure during a press conference on Friday 14 October 2016, informed that this is a five million-dollar increase from its earlier commitment.

Three test wells were constructed in Trafalgar, Wotten Waven and Morne Prosper and followed by four flow tests to determine the generation capacity of the wells, meaning how many megawatts can be obtained from that well.

In addition, a geothermal resources development bill – a critical piece of legislation to facilitate investment in geothermal energy – is to be tabled in Parliament on Wednesday 19 October 2016.

Chile: World Bank Gives $1.78 Million for Geothermal Energy Development

World Bank Supports Geothermal Energy Development in Chile to Boost Energy Security (News Release)

The World Bank Board of Executive Directors approved today a US$1.78 million Clean Technology Fund (CTF) Grant to strengthen the Chilean Ministry of Energy’s capacity to further develop the country’s geothermal sector and improve its energy security.

The grant will contribute to Chile’s Energy Agenda (Agenda de Energía. Un Desafío País, Progreso para Todos) and the Energy Policy 2050, which aims to boost the use of non-conventional renewable energy (NCRE) and reduce the cost of electricity. Chile’s abundant geothermal potential provides a good renewable energy option to further diversify the country’s power generation mix, and reduce price volatility.  The Government of Chile has made a concerted effort to develop its nascent geothermal energy industry, but despite what appeared to be a promising start, a number of issues stymied exploration investments.

The Ministry of Energy will be the lead implementation agency, with support from the International Cooperation Agency of Chile (AGCI) within the Ministry of Foreign Relations. The US$1.78 million grant has a four-year implementation period.

Science & Technology: Supercritical CO2 Could Provide Significant Efficiency Gains in Geothermal Power Production

DOE Announces $80 Million Investment to Build Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Pilot Plant Test Facility (News Release)

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is awarding up to $80 million for a six-year project to design, build, and operate a 10 MWe supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO2) pilot plant test facility in San Antonio, TX. The project will be managed by a team led by the Gas Technology Institute (GTI), Southwest Research Institute (SwRI), and General Electric Global Research (GE-GR).

The new facility will support the future commercialization of sCO2 Brayton cycle energy conversion systems by testing and demonstrating the potential energy efficiency and cost benefits of this technology. Today the average efficiency of the U.S. fleet of steam Rankine cycle power plants is in the lower 30 percent range. This new facility has the potential to demonstrate greater than 50 percent cycle efficiency. If successfully developed, the supercritical CO2 power cycles could provide significant efficiency gains in geothermal, coal, nuclear, and solar thermal power production.

USA, California: $4.7 Million Available for Geothermal Grant and Loan Program

Geothermal Grant and Loan Program (GRDA) (CEC)

Today in Sacramento, the California Energy Commission  (CEC) is holding a Pre-Solicitation Staff Workshop on the Geothermal Grant and Loan Program (GRDA).

The GRDA was established to promote development and maintenance of California's vast geothermal energy resources; mitigate any adverse impacts caused by geothermal development; and help local jurisdictions offset the costs of providing public services necessitated by geothermal development.

The CEC anticipates publication of the Grant Funding Opportunity (GFO)
in mid to late November, 2016. The GFO is a competitive grant solicitation of approximately $4.7 million available to fund selected projects.

Grant agreements expected to start in late July 2017 and end in March 2020.

Australia: Geothermal Energy Touted for Victoria

Geothermal promising for Latrobe Valley (ABC Online)

Geothermal energy involves harnessing the heat of the Earth’s upper crust, moving it to the surface and utilizing the heat as steam, to turn generators. 

Rachel Webster says a mistake of earlier geothermal work was to think too big. There are more options and greater feasibility when thinking small and distributing power locally.

An area with great geothermal potential is Victoria’s Latrobe Valley, where a vast heat source sits below the region’s seam of brown coal. This could be developed as present generating infrastructure approaches the end of its operating life.

Philippines: Aboitiz Suggests Public-Private Partnerships for Geothermal Energy Projects

Aboitiz wants hydro, geothermal projects under PPP scheme (Manila Bulletin)

Aboitiz Power Corporation is recommending investment landscape changes for hydro and geothermal projects so these can be placed under public-private partnership (PPP) scheme.

The company said the government must come in as private sector ally to move projects forward, especially in cornering consents and permits of relevant stakeholders, including host communities.

Aboitiz Power President and Chief Operating Officer Antonio R. Moraza said this is particularly significant for hydropower and geothermal developments – given the extent of project approval processes that they would need before they can even proceed to development or construction phases of power facilities.

“Geothermal and impounding hydro should be under PPP…it’s too hard for private individuals to assemble 30, 40 or 50 communities to seek consent, government should really be involved there,” he said.

Australia: 46 Degree Celsius Geothermal Waters from 1000 Meter Wells Available for Development

Interest in new hot springs developments on Mornington Peninsula bubbles up (The Age)

Investigations of the aquifer that lies deep underneath the peninsula, part of the so-called Werribee Formation, have found that 4000 megalitres of hot water (equivalent to 4000 Olympic-size swimming pools) could be sustainably harvested each year, according to the water company responsible for local groundwater management, Southern Rural Water.

The hot water, or "geothermal water" underneath the peninsula lies at a depth of about 500-1000 metres and is about 46 degrees celsius when it gets to the surface, according to Southern Rural Water.

Kenya: Menengai Geothermal Power Projects Fall Behind Schedule

CS Charles Keter puts power producers on 30-day notice (The Standard)

The Government has given three agents 30 days to start producing electricity from steam wells or have their contracts terminated. Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Charles Keter said there is enough steam at the Menengai Crater to add some 105 megawatts (MW) of electricity to the national grid. He said the continued delay by the three independent power producers (IPPs) was hurting the Geothermal Development Company’s (GDC) operations.

The producers, who include Quantum East Africa and OrPower 22, were supposed to set up their power plants by December last year. The investors, who were selected through competitive bidding in 2013, are mandated to build and operate three geothermal plants in Menengai, each generating 35 MW. Construction was supposed to have started in October 2013 and be completed by the end of last year.

Costa Rica: Mitsubishi Hitachi to Provide Turbine for 55 MW Pailas II Geothermal Power Project

MHPS Receives Order for Geothermal Power Plant Steam Turbine for Costa Rican Institute of Electricity -- Las Pailas II Construction Project -- (News Release)


Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems, Ltd. (MHPS) has received an order for a 55 megawatt (MW) class steam turbine for the Costa Rican Institute of Electricity  (ICE: Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad), Costa Rica's state electricity and telecommunications utility. The turbine will be a core component of the Las Pailas II geothermal power plant, which will be built in Guanacaste Province in the northwest region of the country.

INITEC Energía, S.A., a Spanish engineering firm, will be in charge of EPCM (engineering, procurement and construction management) on the project. MHPS will supply the steam turbine through that company and will also dispatch engineers to the site to provide technical advice in installation and commissioning, taking advantage of its abundant experience as an EPC (engineering, procurement and construction) contractor. A generator, manufactured by Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, will also be supplied.

Caribbean: Green Climate Fund Approves USD 80 Million to Develop 60 MW Geothermal Energy in Eastern Caribbean

GCF Board approves USD 745 million in funding proposals (GCF)


The Green Climate Fund (GCF) has reached a new milestone today with the approval of USD 745 million in funding proposals at its fourteenth meeting. The 10 projects and programs have a total value of USD 2.6 billion, and will help 27 countries across the globe to reduce their emissions and adapt to the impacts of climate change.

USD 80 million was approved for a Sustainable Energy Facility for the Eastern Caribbean with IDB. The program anticipates 60 MW of Geothermal power generation capacity installed in projects facilitated or financed at some stage on Dominica, Grenada, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

The document associated with the awards state that Dominica (DOM), Grenada (GRE), Saint Kitts & Nevis (SKN), Saint Lucia (SL) and Saint Vincent & Grenadines (SVG), are Small Island Developing States (SIDS) located in the Eastern Caribbean region, with small and isolated electricity markets, highly dependent on imported liquid fossil fuels for electricity generation. In 2013, the average electricity tariff was very high, at US$0.39 per kWh. Despite the decrease in world oil prices since mid-2014, electricity prices in this region remain relatively high compared with those in USA and other territories.

Geothermal Energy (GE) presents the largest available renewable energy (RE) resource and could provide the lowest electricity generation cost in addition to being the most reliable.

There are still questions to answer. But Alberta could generate clean electrical energy – and reduce its “orphan” well issues – by adopting new geothermal technology.

Provinces and states near Alberta are already taking a lead, a Lethbridge audience learned Thursday. But with so many abandoned gas and oil wells across the province, it’s time our province turned some of those environmental liabilities into emission-free assets.

Nations around the Pacific Rim – and as far north as Iceland – have been tapping into geothermal energy for generations, explained geologist Katie Huang. Speaking for Canada’s fledgling geothermal industry, she said this nation has been slow off the mark.

Indonesia: Government Says PGE/PLN Meger Would Boost Geothermal Energy Production

PLN, Pertamina synergy to boost geothermal development: Govt (Jakarta Post)

The government plans to appoint a state-run energy firm to focus on geothermal development in a bid to meet the energy mix target, saying that the acquisition of Pertamina subsidiary Pertamina Geothermal Energy (PGE) by state utility firm PLN would make this dream come true.

Although reluctant to call it an “acquisition”, the Small and Medium Enterprises Ministry’s deputy for energy, logistics, regional and tourism development, Edwin Hidayat Abdullah, said the synergy between PLN and state-owned oil and gas company Pertamina would increase efficiency and eliminate duplication of investment between state-run energy firms.

He said the synergy would allow PGE to speed up geothermal development to meet the 7.2-gigawatt (GW) target of installed electricity by 2025, or 23 percent of the total energy mix. Currently, installed capacity of geothermal power plants is only 1.5 GW.

Four Workshops at Geothermal Resources Council Annual Meeting

Four workshops at the GRC Annual Meeting & GEA GeoExpo+ in Sacramento, California. 


The Geothermal Resources Council (GRC) has announced more details of events at the biggest geothermal conference of the year at the Sacramento Convention Center, Sacramento, California, USA.

In addition to the main event of the GRC Annual Meeting & GEA GeoExpo+ taking place October 23-26, 2016, there will be two workshops before the conference and two during the geothermal energy event of the year.

Two geothermal workshops will be held over two days on Friday and Saturday, October 21 and 22, before the start of the main event.

The Conceptual Models of Geothermal Systems workshop will focus on building geothermal resource conceptual models as the basis for well targeting and resource capacity assessments at all stages of exploration and development.

The Reservoir Stimulation: Recent Field Practices, Monitoring Techniques and Theoretical/Laboratory Investigations workshop will provide a platform for in-depth review and discussion of recent Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) field experiences and will provide attendees with an understanding of recent advances in monitoring technologies and theoretical, laboratory and numerical modeling pertaining to reservoir stimulation.

On Sunday, October 23 a Best Practices in Operation and Maintenance workshop will allow attendees to share lessons learned in geothermal O&M that can help improve the bottom line of every operating plant, and potentially make new plants more competitive with natural gas, wind and solar alternatives.

On Wednesday, October 26 a 2 hour Geothermal 101 workshop will give California legislators,  energy regulators and their staff, educators, students and the general public an overview of the many benefits of geothermal energy.

The GRC Workshop presentations will be given by experts from private industry, national laboratories and universities, and should prove valuable for anyone interested in learning about the latest exciting developments in geothermal energy.

Indonesia: 525 MW of Geothermal Energy Projects On Offer

MEMR launches new geothermal power tenders (blplaw.com)

Green power developers in Indonesia have the opportunity to participate in 8 greenfield geothermal tender pre-qualifications to be launched by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR) during the remainder of 2016.

As we understand, the tenders will involve a combined PPA capacity of 525-MW, and are spread over a variety of provinces. Certain tenderers may have a “right to match”, after conducting preliminary site surveys on behalf of PT PLN (Persero).

Indonesia: Foreign Investors Interested in North Sulawesi Geothermal Energy Project

Kuwait, Saudi investors evince interest in geothermal projects in Gorontalo (Antara News)

Kuwaiti investor Rajan Ethirajan of the Al Subol General Trading, along with Arab investor Jiju Thundiyil John, have expressed an interest to invest in the geothermal power plants in Gorontalo.

The head of Gorontalo Regional Development Board (Bappeda), Budianto Sidiki, said on Wednesday that they expressed an interest soon after Gorontalos Governor Rusli Habibie detailed the regions potential at the opening of an event titled, Indonesia Middle East Update 2016.

Data with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources shows a significant geothermal potential in the Bone Bolango sub-district, Gorontalo. It can produce up to 110 megawatt of electricity supply in Gorontalo and 20 megawatt in the Gorontalo sub-district.

Finance: Geothermal Energy Development Might Accelerate Due to Climate Change Concerns - Report

In 2015, total power output totaled 75 TWh, the same number being also valid for total heat output from geothermal energy (excluding ground heat pumps). World geothermal heat use (direct & storage) reached 563 PJs in 2014.

Global investment in 2015 was US$2 billion, a 23% setback from 2014. During the period 2010-2014, around US$20 billion were invested in geothermal energy by 49 countries for both direct use and electric power.

Geothermal energy currently finds itself burdened by higher installation costs and longer development periods, relative to solar and wind. As a result, in many countries, geothermal energy projects have been and are reliant on government incentives in order to compete against both natural gas and other renewable generation.

The pace of geothermal development has been conditioned by legal frameworks and particularly by conservation legislation. However, the pace of development might accelerate due to climate change concerns and the increasing need to decarbonise the energy sector.

USA: Tax Credits for Geothermal Energy Could be Revisited After Election

Obama readies clean energy 'end-game' (Washington Examiner)

The White House is devising an "end-game" strategy to pass a suite of clean energy tax subsidies that were swept to the wayside in last December's omnibus spending bill deal, said a top White House official.

Brian Deese, one of President Obama's top advisers, told an energy conference Tuesday that the White House is working on a clean energy "end-game" with its allies in Congress to see tax credits for a variety of alternative energy resources passed after the November elections in the lame-duck session of Congress.

"We are quite aware of the incremental extensions that weren't included last time," Deese said on a panel during the Tuesday event held by Columbia University. "We have been working closely with our congressional allies and we want to see those get done."

The tax credits were not attached to last year's spending bill, although the measure did include a landmark deal extending wind and solar subsidies for five years with an incremental phase out. The orphaned clean energy subsidies that were left out of the deal are for things like hydrogen fuel cells, renewable fuel infrastructure, geothermal and other alternative energy resources.

Kenya: Geothermal Energy Provides 47% of Electricity

Thermal energy production drops (ESI Africa)

In East Africa, the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics' (KNBS) latest data reporting the decline in electricity generated from thermal energy resources has been welcomed as good news.

According to the Standard Media, the generation capacity has dropped by 10% to 855.5 million kWh by August this year compared to a similar period last year, whereby thermal sources generated 951.9 million kWh.

It is said that the fall has seen the share of thermal sources in the overall energy generation basket dive from 16% to 13%.

Diesel-fired electricity is reported to be three times more expensive than geothermal costing Sh7 per unit ($0.069) and seven times higher than hydropower at Sh3 ($0.029).

The KNBS data stated that geothermal remained the top source of energy, accounting for 47% of total production in the period under review.

In addition to the good news from the data was the revelation that indicated hydropower coming in second with a 40% increase.

Japan: Geothermal Power System Uses Injected River Water

New geothermal power generator set for trial run (NHK)

A Japanese venture firm and researchers at a university in Japan say they have developed a new system that harnesses geothermal power. They say a trial run of the system will start later this week.

Tokyo-based Japan New Energy and Kyoto University jointly created the technology.

Members of the project team say it does not require the usual process of pumping up hot springs or underground steam. The new generator uses river water that's sent into pipes deep underground where it's heated, then brought back up to the surface to generate electricity.

The officials say the trial run will start in Oita prefecture, in southwestern Japan. They aim to put it into commercial use in 2 years' time.

Kenya: KenGen Seeks to Boost Geothermal Energy Production

KenGen has begun a geothermal development study with a view to producing more power. MD Albert Mugo said Kenya has the potential to produce 10,000 MW geothermal energy in 23 sites.

“So far we have only tapped 650 MW of geothermal energy and we are working with other partners so we can increase geothermal power,” he said.

Mugo said the cost of geothermal exploration had for years remained the biggest impediment.

USA: Get Help in Geothermal Energy R&D from the National Labs

The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) is proud to announce the third round of the Small Business Vouchers (SBV) Pilot. The DOE began accepting Requests for Assistance (RFA) on Monday, October 10th after a formal announcement at the SXSW Eco’s Energy Startup Showcase.

DOE's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) is putting the world-class resources of the national labs at your fingertips with the SBV Pilot. In the first two rounds, 76 small businesses received vouchers for approximately $15 million in technical assistance from national labs to help bring the next generation of clean-energy technologies to market. The SBV pilot gives our nation’s clean-tech small businesses the opportunity to take their innovative products to the next level. By supporting their growth, the U.S. helps these companies make a more meaningful impact on the economy and clean-energy sector.

Over rounds three and four, $12 million is available for vouchers across EERE’s clean-energy sectors. EERE’s Geothermal Technologies Office (GTO) has nearly $800 thousand available to support vouchers in all of its mission areas of EGS, Hydrothermal, Low Temperature, and Systems Analysis. Companies have until November 10 to submit RFAs for round three; round four is expected to be announced early in 2017.

Businesses interested in SBV funding must be U.S.-based and U.S.-owned, with no more than 500 full-time employees worldwide. Individual vouchers range from $50,000 to $300,000 per small business and can be used to perform collaborative research or access to lab instrumentation or facilities. Companies selected must also provide a 20 percent cost share for completing voucher work. EERE welcomes the opportunity to collaborate with small businesses that have little to no experience working with a DOE national laboratory.

USA, California: City of Sonoma Chooses Geothermal Energy for its Electricity Needs

Sonoma goes greener with new ‘EverGreen’ utility plan (Sonoma Index-Tribune)

Taking a small step into the energy future, the City of Sonoma voted last week to become the first jurisdiction in Sonoma County, and perhaps the North Bay, to adopt the zero-emissions EverGreen plan from Sonoma Clean Power.

The optional premium plan, which uses 100 percent local renewable power sources for providing kilowatts to the city’s 42 electrical accounts, will cost the city more money than the standard CleanStart program – which uses 36 percent renewable energy – but supporters believe that it may help the city meet one of its current term goals of advancing Climate Action 2020, a countywide plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. And perhaps provide a boost in bragging rights.

Sonoma Clean Power (SCP), the regional alternative utility formed in 2014 under the state’s Community Choice Aggregation law, declares that the EverGreen plan is comprised of 100 percent local renewable resources, entirely geothermal energy from the Calpine Geysers facility in northern Sonoma County. SCP plans to add the delivery of locally-generated solar power to the mix next year.

Indonesia: UK and World Bank to Finance 50 MW Waisano Geothermal Power Plant

Gov't to Develop Geothermal Energy in Flores Island (Metro TV News)

The Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry will develop geothermal energy in Flores Island in East Nusa Tenggara.

The ministry's geothermal director Yunus Saefulhak said Indonesia will cooperate with the the United Kingdom (UK) and the World Bank.

He explained Flores island has many potential geothermal hot spots. The island has at least 1,900 MW of geothermal energy potential.

However, the island only has two geothermal power plants. A 10 MW power plant in Ulumbu, Manggarai and a 2.5 MW power plant in Malaloko, Ende.

"We will cooperate with the World Bank to build a 50 MW power plant in Waisano," he stated.

Kenya: Suswa Farmer Condenses Water Supply from Geothermal Steam

Joseph Saitabao saw perennial water where no one else did. He saw it around Mount Suswa, Kenya, where no one lived during the dry season due to the lack of water. During the rainy season, people would get by on rooftop water harvested in tanks, or runoff captured in ephemeral ponds they built. But when tanks and ponds dried up people would leave until the rains returned. Joseph, however, saw untapped water in the form of steam arising from natural vents in the earth.

He got the idea for how to harvest this water by observing a geothermal plant while he was looking for work in another area with steam vents near Hell’s Gate National Park, 100 kilometers away. Undeterred by his lack of formal education, Joseph taught himself how to harvest that steam through innovation and experimentation.

Iran Hopes that its first geothermal plant would help uplift steam-related industries such as greenhouses, fish farming and tourism in the Ardebil region

Iran expects to start producing electricity from the heat of the earth less than a year from now as it takes steps to slowly move away from fossil fuel power stations that account for more than 80% of its installed power capacity.

Hamid Chitchian, the energy minister, said the country's first geothermal power plant in Meshgin Shahr, Ardebil Province near the Azerbaijan border in the northwest, will be launched by September 2017, IRNA reported.

The 55 MW plant is also billed as the first geothermal power station in the Middle East.

Kenya: Private Sector to be Given Land Concessions to Explore for Geothermal Energy

Kenya is seeking to promote private investment into the geothermal energy sector through review of policies, an official said Thursday.

Principal Secretary for Energy and Petroleum, Joseph Njoroge, told journalists that under the new regulations, private sector will be given land concessions to explore for geothermal steam.

“The aim is to enable private sector to complement government exploration efforts so as increase amount of geothermal electricity production in the country,” Njoroge said during the Kenya Renewable Energy Conference.
