Ecuador: 50 MW Chachimbiro Geothermal Project Reports More than 200 Degree Celsius Source at 2,000 Meter Depth

Celec and Japanese parliamentarians review the progress of the Chachimbiro geothermal project (BNamericas)

On August 7, 2018, the General Manager of the Ecuadorian Electric Corporation (CELEC EP), Eng. Gonzalo Uquillas, along with the Japanese Parliamentarians Asahiko Mihara and Daishiro Yamagiwa, and the ambassador of that country in Ecuador, Hitoshi Noda, They reviewed the advances in the Chachimbiro Geothermal Project, located in the province of Imbabura.

The first geothermal drilling in the country has reached 2,000 meters depth. The first results are encouraging: the downhole temperature is higher than 200 degrees Celsius and is located in a highly permeable area. The generation capacity of this project is 50 MW. The results allow us to move towards the second stage for the development of the geothermal field.

At the same time, JICA offered permanent advice to the Corporation to promote geothermal growth in Ecuador, such as the review of geoscientific results, training in Japan through scholarships for CELEC EP personnel in the areas of geology, geochemistry and project management. all this oriented to the generation of local capacities for the use of this resource in our country. In addition, the study of Chachimbiro was followed by a Japanese geothermal expert.
