Canada: Study Identifies 80 MW of Potential Geothermal Energy Within County of Grande Prairie

County explores geothermal potential (Alberta Daily Herald Tribune)

The County of Grande Prairie and other local municipalities are looking into developing geothermal power, which proponents say makes economic sense now that policies such as the carbon tax are making traditional power production more expensive.

Jonathan Banks, a researcher at the University of Alberta’s department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, presented the results of a study into geothermal potential during Monday’s county council meeting. The study mapped out reservoirs that could be used for geothermal power stations in an area spread out across the city and county of Grande Prairie, the MD of Greenview, Hinton, the Tri-council of Clearwater County, the Village of Caroline and Rocky Mountain House. The study identified 80 megawatts of geothermal energy within the County of Grande Prairie, enough to provide for all of the county’s domestic and commercial needs, Banks said.
