USA: Geothermal Energy Part of Rising Renewables Sector

U.S. energy consumption rose slightly in 2016 despite a significant decline in coal use (EIA)

Geothermal energy consumption grew by just under 8% from 213 to 230 Trillion Btu.


Primary energy consumption in the United States in 2016 totaled 97.4 quadrillion British thermal units (Btu), a slight increase from the 2015 level. Consumption of coal decreased by 9%, nearly offsetting increases in the consumption of renewables, petroleum, natural gas, and nuclear fuel.

Renewable fuels had the largest increase in energy consumption in 2016. Wind generation increased by nearly 20%, making up almost half of all renewable consumption increases. Geothermal energy consumption grew by just under 8% from 213 to 230 Trillion Btu.
