Australia: Funds provided for Queensland Geothermal Power Project

Proposed Roma, Mitchell geothermal plants tipped to save Maranoa council $20m over 20 years (ABC Local)

A south-west Queensland council says plans to build two clean energy plants to power its assets will save ratepayers $20 million over 20 years.

Maranoa Regional Council yesterday approved another $7,500 towards planning for a geothermal plant at Roma. A second plant has been touted for Mitchell.

Maranoa councillor David Schefe said if the project was built, the $3 million investment required would be worth it.

"We're only looking at supplying power to council assets, so council's assets are pretty extensive and widely used by the community and there's a huge amount of power usage there," he said. "The projections moving forward of course are that energy prices are only going to continue to move upwards. "There's a lot of other subsidies that come and go federally that we might be able to tap into too which will make it even more lucrative for our community.
