United Kingdom: Geological Survey Launched at Stoke-on-Trent geothermal District Heating Project

Council start hi-tech search to find free energy (Stoke Sentinel)

Hi-tech trucks are being deployed to search for 'free' heat energy – two miles underground.

Stoke-on-Trent City Council plans to commission a geothermal plant in the Etruria Valley to power its £52 million district heat network.

Over the next week specialist contractors will be carrying out a geological survey to map the rocks deep beneath the valley, from Keele University to Birches Head.

Their trucks will use a sonar-like system to search for evidence of hot underground water, which could be pumped to the service and used to heat homes and businesses.

Sebastien Danneels, the council's district heat network technical lead, said: "The research we have done shows that you can find water at 100 degrees if you go 3km down. The evidence suggests that Stoke-on-Trent has the best potential for geothermal heat in the country.
