The country has lined up a number of projects which once completed will add an additional 3,000 MW of geothermal power to the national grid by the year 2022.

Kenya is ranked the 7th largest producer of geothermal energy globally, the only African country in the top ten. Kenya is hoping to dislodge the United States as the world’s top producer of geothermal power by the year 2022.

In the steam rich Rift Valley region, Kenya Electricity Generating Company Limited (KenGen) is set to officially commission 280 MW generated from Olkaria 1’s units 4 and 5 as well as Olkaria IV power plants. Power from the two plants was fed into the national grid as from last December.

According to the U.S. Geothermal Energy Association, Kenya will become the world leader if its planned projects are completed on time.
