The Canadian federal government has announced a combined $4.5 million in financing for two Quebec-based projects through the ecoENERGY Innovation Initiative (ecoEII) including a deep geothermal project.

L’Institut de recherche d’Hydro-Quebec (IREQ) will receive $800,000 as it explores the potential for deep geothermal electricity production for Quebec and Atlantic Canada.

The objective of this project is to study the potential for deep geothermal (EGS – Enhanced Geothermal System) for electricity production in Québec and Atlantic Canada.

The project will develop knowledge and expertise that will support geothermal development by identifying and characterizing the regions and sites that are most favorable for geothermal exploration and development.  Site selection as well as an in depth study for the development of an EGS pilot will take place.  This study will address the scientific, technical, economic, and regulatory elements that support a pilot geothermal project in Quebec and Atlantic Canada.
