Geothermal Energy From Mines Could Heat Cumbria Development (Times & Star)

Green energy including geothermal energy is part of the vision for the Utropia project, set to be built at the former Royal Naval Armament Depot (RNAD) site near Broughton Moor by Derwent Forest Development Consortium in north west Cumbria in north England..

Nigel Catterson, consortium chairman, said that geothermal energy was being investigated at the site.

He added: “There were a couple of deep mines on the site. We are looking at the possibility of bringing heat up and using that possibly for district heating schemes.”

“The primary objective of the renewable energy production is to power the properties and facilities on the site but if we have the potential to export some to benefit the local communities we’ll do that.”
