Kenya:

140 MW Olkaria IV Geothermal Power Plant Commissioned (allafrica.com)

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta on Friday commissioned the 140 MW Olkaria IV Geothermal Power Plant in Naivasha.

Uhuru said the plant, key to Jubilee's infrastructure strategy, is expected to reduce the cost of electricity in Kenya. Since geothermal energy is not subject to fluctuations in international oil prices, it offers a more affordable source of power in the long run.

The cost of generating electricity from geothermal sources, at seven US cents per kilowatt hour (kWh), is far lower than using diesel at 22 US cents per kWh.

German Development Cooperation partially funded the plant and the German government contributed more than €70.6 (Sh10.1 billion) million to Olkaria I and IV for construction and drilling.
