Cumbria's Old Mines Could Hold Key To Cheaper Energy Using Geothermal (in-cumbria)

The water that has flooded into the disused mines could be used to supply heat using geothermal energy. A similar scheme being developed in Glasgow could provide 40 per cent of the city's heat, scientists believe.

Lee Carr, of Britain's Energy Coast, told delegates at the Energy Business Opportunities Conference in Lillyhall yesterday that the idea was being explored as a way of tapping into an unexpected legacy of west Cumbria's mining heritage.

"We are looking at Glasgow city Council project which is using disused mines filled with water and that water is at a temperature that can be used to distribute heat.

We have also lot of redundant mines too so we see this as having potential for west Cumbria."
