California remains the most attractive state for geothermal energy according to a new index released by Ernst & Young (PDF). The Golden State also remains top for all renewables.

The biannual renewable energy market attractiveness indices look at overall energy markets and individual technologies, providing scores out of 100. U.S. investment in clean energy was $44.2 billion in 2012, down from $65.4 billion in 2011.

Despite its intermittence, wind still led the way in 2012, adding 13,124 MW of capacity and representing 41 percent of total renewable generation additions for the year.

Solar PV installations in the U.S. represented 11 percent of the global total, its highest share in recent years. Geothermal added just 77 MW of capacity last year.
