Philippines:

EDC Taps Alstom for Bac-man Rehab (Power Engineering)

Energy Development Corp. (EDC) has awarded to Alstom SA of France the repair works of both Unit 1 and Unit 2 generator rotors of the Bacon-Manito geothermal plants

EDC in a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange on Monday said Alstom's ownership of the design of ABB (the original equipment manufacturer of the generator) would significantly reduce risks.

EDC said it issued Notice to Proceed on the works to Alstom on Feb. 15.

The Unit 1 generator rotor will be transported to the Alstom generator works facility in Stafford England, UK where it will be fully inspected, and rewind with new copper wires. The Unit 2 rotor will follow the Unit 1 rotor to Alstom works in due time," the company said.

EDC expects to complete the rehabilitation of the Bac-man geothermal plants within the latter part of the third quarter this year.

EDC's wholly-owned subsidiary, Bacman Geothermal, Inc., took control of the facility in September 2010 after posting the highest bid of P 1.28 billion.

The Bac-Man geothermal plant covers the boundary of Legaspi City, Sorsogon City, Bacon District of Sorsogon City and the town of Manito Albay in the Bicol Region.

The geothermal complex originally had a 150-megawatt power generating capacity but has not been operating since last year.

EDC remains the largest producer of geothermal energy in the Philippines accounting for 62 percent of the total country installed geothermal capacity. (PNA)
