USA, California: Geothermal Energy Helps the Golden State through a Bad Weather Day

Geothermal Energy Tops Wind and Solar in California

Southern California was battered by a big storm yesterday which affected the supply of electricity from solar and wind resources. Heavy rain resulted in mud-slides in areas that were burned in recent wildfires and snow fell on the "Grapevine" a section of Interstate 5 just north of Los Angeles.

However, geothermal energy power plants were not affected, providing electricity from a constant 1,000 MW capacity.

Yesterday in California, geothermal energy was the biggest provider of electricity from renewable resources to the CAISO grid, with over 24,000 MWh. Winds produced 23,043 MWh, solar energy (PV and thermal) peaked around 10 am and only supplied 11,062 MWh.
