USA, Texas: Converting Coal Plants to Geothermal Power - One Day Workshop

Pre-conference Workshop - Coal and Geothermal: A Path Forward (SMU)

January 10, 2018, SMU Geothermal Laboratory, Dallas, Texas, USA

While many U.S. power plants are modern combined cycle natural gas plants, the largest capacity production is still generated by coal plants, many of which are near the end of their useful life. Rather than close these plants altogether, impacting U.S. baseload capacity and employment, this workshop provides a path forward to an emissions free, yet still baseload power source: geothermal energy at the same site. The conversion would utilize the coal plants’ existing physical footprint, their connectivity to the grid, their water output, and their skilled personnel.

The pre-conference workshop will bring together coal plant owners and operators, experienced below and above ground engineers, key technology and service companies, finance and investment bankers, and regulatory agencies to realize the steps for successfully transitioning coal fired power generation plants to geothermal power.

Workshop enrollment is by application. Participants will be expected to ‘roll up their sleeves’ and help work out approaches for moving coal to geothermal plant conversion from the drawing board to completed projects. Workshop registration of $795 includes complimentary access to the Power Plays conference, January 10-11, 2018. A limited amount of expense reimbursement is available to qualified participants.

Enrollment is limited, so please respond today. Email geothermal@smu.edu.
