Kenya: Tapping geothermal potential with first of its kind technology in Kenya

In its quest to generate more reliable, clean energy, Kenya has become the first country worldwide to pioneer new geothermal wellhead technology. The technique involves tapping steam from wells that are undergoing tests or awaiting connection to permanent plants. The technology not only helps to utilise the investment put into drilling the wells, which would otherwise be lying idle, but also benefits from early generation.
Kenya’s demand for electricity is driven by the recent, rapid economic growth and industrialisation, which has created the need to accelerate the drilling of geothermal wells to tap into the resource potential and avoid the over-reliance on erratic hydroelectric power. Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) related that “the long drought has reduced the capacity of main dams, forcing shutdowns and leading to reliance on costly diesel-powered generators, pushing up energy bills”.

USA: Portland State to test new revolutionary geothermal technology for heating during winter

Portland State University has received a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to study the feasibility of bringing new methods of harnessing the power of geothermal energy to previously untapped regions of the United States such as Portland.

PSU was one of six universities throughout the U.S. to receive a collective $4 million in grants from the DOE. Portland's share is $720,000, and will be split between PSU and local partners including the U.S. Geological Survey, City of Portland, AltaRock Energy, and OHSU.

The money will be used to research a new kind of geothermal technology called Deep Direct-Use.
Unlike traditional geothermal power, which relies on natural sources of subterranean hot water such as hot springs and volcanoes, Deep Direct-Use passively heats water above ground during the warm months, stores it underground and then uses the stored heat in the winter. The study will analyze Portland's underlying geology to see if it has enough insulating ability and storage capacity to make that happen. Read more....

USA: Google X Unveils Dandelion: A New Company for Geothermal Energy

URBED's Barbara Eldredge reports that Google's parent company, Alphabet, has announced a new independent company that's dedicated to the bringing affordable home geothermal energy to the masses.
Dubbed Dandelion, the company plans to drive down costs and amp up convenience. Developed over years of research and protyping, the company’s biggest asset in this fight is a new kind of drill that’s purpose-built for drilling geothermal wells. The technology can install geothermal ground loops in just half a day, as opposed to the typical three or four days, and leaves much of the yard undisturbed.

"We started this project because we realized millions of homeowners are using expensive, truck-delivered fuels because they don't have access to better options today," said Dandelion CEO Kathy Hannun in a statement. "We knew if installing a geothermal heat pump was a simpler and more affordable process, these homeowners would have access to a better product that's also better for the climate."

USA: 5 Projects to Receive $15 Million to Investigate Wellbore Integrity

GTO and FE Announce Joint FY17 SubTER Lab Call Selections (DOE/EERE/GTO)

The U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Geothermal Technologies Office (GTO) and the Office of Fossil Energy (FE) announced the selection of 5 projects to receive up to $15 million in funding to investigate wellbore integrity research subjects via a Lab Call announcement. This funding opportunity will address two topic areas:
  1. Wellbore Diagnostics and Integrity assessment in legacy wells, and
  2. Sensors and Tools for Autonomous Completions and Long Term Monitoring of Wellbore Integrity.
The Lab Call is part of a larger effort to address technical challenges associated with operating in the subsurface. In response, DOE has established an integrated technology team that encompasses DOE offices involved in subsurface activities that are aligned with energy production/extraction, subsurface storage of energy and carbon dioxide, subsurface waste disposal and environmental remediation, as well as analysis associated with the subsurface.

GTO and FE partnered in response to a report published by FE in October 2016 titled, Ensuring Safe and Reliable Underground Natural Gas Storage. The report states that to lower the risk for wellbore failure, operators should prioritize integrity tests that provide hard data on well performance through monitoring, logging, and mechanical integrity testing. Well Integrity testing should also use multiple methodologies and not rely on a single diagnostics, and use continuous real time monitoring.

The selected awardees include:
  • Sandia National Laboratories
  • National Energy and Technology Laboratory
  • Los Alamos National Laboratory
  • Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory

Indonesia: $270 Million Fund to Finance Geothermal Exploration

Gov't Lays Groundwork for Geothermal Exploration Fund (Jakarta Globe)

Indonesia has laid the groundwork for a $270 million fund to finance geothermal exploration, as part of the country's efforts to boost renewable sources of energy.

The government has allocated Rp 3 trillion ($224 million) in the 2017 state budget for the so-called Government Drilling Fund, which will be used to finance geothermal exploration around Indonesia.

The Washington-based World Bank will also chip in with a $55.25 million loan to shore up the fund.

Sarana Multi Infrastruktur, the government's infrastructure investment arm, will be responsible for managing the fund under supervision of the ministries of finance and energy.

Indonesia has about 29 gigawatts of geothermal capacity – the largest in the world – but high exploration costs and the risks involved often prove prohibitive for investors in the sector.

Rida Mulyana, director general of renewable energy and energy conservation at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, said the fund will help reduce exploration risks borne by geothermal producers.

Under the scheme, the government will conduct a survey of potential geothermal resources and drill exploration wells, activities that are usually capital intensive.

Geothermal Energy News from Around the World

Global Geothermal News - Weekly Update

A Round-up of this week's geothermal energy news.......

USA: Electricity from Renewable Energy is More Than from Nuclear

Monthly renewable electricity generation surpasses nuclear for the first time since 1984 (EIA)

In March, and again in April, U.S. monthly electricity generation from utility-scale renewable sources exceeded nuclear generation for the first time since July 1984. This outcome reflects both seasonal and trend growth in renewable generation, as well as maintenance and refueling schedules for nuclear plants, which tend to undergo maintenance during spring and fall months, when overall electricity demand is lower than in summer or winter.

Canada: Existing Policy Support for Renewable Energy is Currently Insufficient for Development of Geothermal - Opinion

Can we use geothermal instead of hydro to decarbonise BC? (The Climate Examiner)

Risk of failure vs. progression of costs of developing a geothermal power plant (Adapted from: M. Gehringer, V. Loksha. Geothermal Handbook: planning and financing power generation. Energy Sector Management Assistance Program: Technical Report 002/12. The International Bank for Reconstruction. The World Bank Group. 2012.)
With British Columbia’s soon-to-govern NDP-Green Party coalition poised to send the province’s controversial Site C hydroelectric project to review, many opponents of this hydro expansion are asking why BC cannot develop geothermal energy instead.

This week, the PICS flagship 2060 Project: Integrated Energy Pathways for British Columbia and Canada issued a briefing note seeking to answer that question.

The key challenge is uncertainty. We have a good idea of where hot aquifers might be located, but we aren’t sure. The 11 potential sites are described as ‘P50’, terminology that means that there is a 50/50 chance that the installed capacity will be less (or greater) than projected. So geothermal developers have to drill exploration wells, at a cost of $1 million a pop on average, and then confirmation wells, which cost $4-6 million. This means that as much as half of the cost of development is incurred before anyone knows what the true value of the resource at a particular site will be.

This sort of uncertainty makes investors nervous. Those regions that have extensively developed geothermal such as Iceland overcome this obstacle by reimbursing a proportion of drilling costs or boosting electricity sales revenue via tax credits.

Philippines: Government Targets Power Project Red Tape

EO cuts red tape in issuance of permits for power projects (Business Mirror)

(Courtesy CIA.gov)
Industry players will now only need 30 days—from the current 1,340 days—to secure the necessary permits and licenses to start a big-ticket power project, thanks to Executive Order (EO) 30 issued by President Duterte on June 30.

The EO states that concerned government agencies shall act upon applications for permits involving Energy Projects of National Significance (EPNS) not exceeding within a 30-day period. If no decision is made within the specified processing time frame, the application is deemed approved by the concerned agency.

To be considered among the EPNS, power-generation and -transmission projects must have a capital investment of at least P3.5 billion, significant contribution to the country’s economic development, significant consequential economic impact, significant potential contribution to the country’s balance of payments, significant impact on the environment, complex technical processes and engineering designs and significant infrastructure requirements.

Philippines: Large Earthquake Hits Leyte Province - Geothermal Power Plants Affected

DOE moves for restoration of power in quake-hit Visayas areas (Concept News Central)

The Philippines Department of Energy (DOE) said late Thursday evening that it is overseeing the assessment and restoration of energy services after a magnitude 6.5 earthquake hit the Visayas. Said the DOE in a statement released to media:

At around 4:00 PM today (06 July 2017), a magnitude 6.5 earthquake occurred in Jaro, Leyte causing power interruptions in Leyte, Samar, and Bohol Islands. Panay, Negros, Cebu and the other areas in the Visayas.

Vice President Lito Santos of  Electricity Development Corporation (EDC) reported to Energy Sec. Cusi that all employees in the area are accounted for, with some of the personnel suffering from minor injuries. EDC owns and operates the Unified Leyte Geothermal Power Plants (ULGPP). Santos further submitted that all of ULGPP’s units which generates over 500 MW tripped. Santos assures the energy Secretary that the assessments are still ongoing and will prioritize the Tongonan Unit.

Green Core Geothermal Inc. reported that it’s Palinpinon geothermal power plant unit 1 which generates around 37 MW tripped. It was offline at around 4:00pm due to the activation of the Cebu-Negros System Integrity Protection Scheme. However, the plant was immediately back online and delivering its generated electricity at 5:00pm of the same day.

Netherlands: Three Kilometer Deep Geothermal Wells to Heat New Greenhouse Project

TFFG acquires Netherlands’ largest organic vegetable producer (Fresh Fruit Portal)

The largest organic vegetable producer in the Netherlands has been bought by The Fruit Farm Group (TFFG), an entity created three years ago by the shareholders of Belgian-headquartered produce multinational Univeg.

AC Hartman has 72 hectares of horticultural land in the northern Dutch village of Sexbierum which will be expanded to 110 hectares over the next few years making it one of the Netherland’s largest glasshouse horticultural companies.

As part of the new project, AC Hartman’s greenhouses will be heated with geothermal energy – heat energy generated and stored in the earth.

A three kilometre deep well will be bored into the ground in the Sexbierum area from which water will be pumped up to heat the greenhouses. Cool water will then be pumped back into the soil via another well.

Working with AC Hartman to reduce CO2 emissions is Friesland Clean Energy Fund and the Dutch National Green Fund (NGF).

“The ground in the Province of Friesland is highly suitable for geothermal energy. The transition from natural gas to terrestrial heat will eventually lead to a sharp reduction in the province’s use of fossil fuels, thus making an important contribution to meeting its sustainability targets,” Friesland Clean Energy Fund CEO Michel Hendriks says.

Science & Technology: Opinion Piece on Cooperation Between Oil & Gas and Geothermal Technologies

How The Oil Industry Will Survive The Decline of Oil (OilPro)

by Nick Warren, Engineering Manager at Quantum Process Systems

Drilling resources will be redeployed to geothermal applications focusing on hot rock targets, generating – ideally – pure superheated steam.

Most current geothermal plants are open-loop with the more prominent using superheated brines. These are to be found within geologically active regions with shallow high-temperature fractured / permeable strata. The holy-grail target configuration will be closed-loop, which possesses none of the awesome silica scaling challenges associated with the use of open-loop brines.

Extended–reach, horizontal wells can deliver a highly effective steam super-heating system with imaginative completion design. Energy on demand, for short-term bursts of peak time power, forms an attractive target market. Peak-shaving power generation is a growing and rather obvious target. Geothermal is virtually limitless – and available 24/7.
