USA: 22 Geothermal Patents Awarded in 2015

Clean Energy Patent Growth Index (CEPGI) - 2015 Year in Review


The Clean Energy Patent Growth Index (CEPGI), published quarterly by the Cleantech Group at Heslin Rothenberg Farley & Mesiti P.C. provides an indication of the trend of innovative activity in the Clean Energy sector from 2002 to the present.

The CEPGI tracks the granting of U.S. patents for clean renewable energy including geothermal. In 2015, 22 Geothermal patents were awarded, a decrease of just one from the year before.

Two Geothermal patents were granted in 2014 to McAlister Technologies, LLC while 21 others were granted one patent. Example grantees include Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources, Board of Regents, The University of Texas System, and GA Drilling. Kalex, LLC continues to lead in Geothermal patents (eight) overall since 2002 despite not having any patents in 2008-2015. Ormat stays in second with seven. Canyon West has four, and GE three total Geothermal patents since 2002.
