Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis: Discussion on Geothermal Energy Development on the Caribbean Islands

Is it feasible for St. Kitts, Nevis to pursue geothermal separately? (WINN FM)

Why is St. Kitts exploring the possibility of developing geothermal energy Nevis has been pursuing that path for the last several years?

The government announced in July that it has ramped up its pursuit of geothermal energy, as it seeks to expand renewable energy alternatives. At that time, speaking at the Prime Minister’s monthly press conference, Minister of Energy, Ian ‘Patches’ Liburd,  pointed out that plans have been put in place to conduct feasibility study in St. Kitts, to establish the potential of geothermal energy.

But Nevis has been working to develop its geothermal resource for several years under two government administration and just last week announced that it is making progress on this matter. Will both islands pursue geothermal separately and is this cost effective. That’s a question put to both ministers of energy in St. Kitts and in Nevis. Minister Liburd says that despite’s Nevis’ attempts at harnessing geothermal energy; St. Kitts can still pursue its own.
