Canada: Project to Build Geothermal Power Plant by 2020

Geothermal research at the University of Alberta could eventually lead to a test plant that could take an entire town “off the grid” in 2020.

Jonathan Banks dreams of the day when cities and municipalities are less dependent on fossil fuels for their energy needs and can provide power to residents with environmentally friendly geothermal energy instead.

Banks, a researcher at the University of Alberta, is working to get cities and municipalities there, too, by studying 10 different sites across Alberta to determine if they’re suitable for creating a geothermal plant, which he hopes to build by 2020.
