Lib Dem Manifesto: Shale Gas Companies to Give Exhausted Wells to Geothermal Industry (Business Green)

The United Kingdom general election of 2015 will be held on 7 May 2015. The Liberal Democrat party are the junior member of the current 2010–15 Coalition Government with the Conservative party. The "Lib-Dems" put the environment on the front cover of their election manifesto today.

Among the ideas is a proposal to make it compulsory for shale gas firms to offer their exhausted wells to the geothermal energy industry free of charge.

"Once a shale gas well has been used, it must be offered at no cost to geothermal heat developers “to enable faster expansion of this renewable technology”.

On the innovation side, the party would introduce new legal framework to require regulators to facilitate the development of deep geothermal heat, large-scale heat pumps, waste industrial heat and energy storage systems.
