Indonesian Geothermal Power Set to Draw Worldwide Interest (Nikkei Asian Review )

A recent revision to geothermal law passed in Indonesia is likely to kick-start interest in geothermal power generation in the volcano-dotted country. The new legislation, passed on Aug. 26, has eased regulatory restrictions for the development of geothermal resources.

The law removes the ban on the development of geothermal fields located in forest conservation areas and raises the prices at which power generated with geothermal energy is purchased.

The policy shift will create many new business opportunities for trading companies and equipment makers active in the geothermal industry.

Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Jero Wacik is expected to issue an ordinance related to the first revision in the area of geothermal law in 11 years, possibly by the end of the year, to lay down detailed regulations that will govern the development of geothermal power.
