Papua New Guinea, New Zealand:

New Zealand has agreed to provide its consultants to help  Papua New Guinea (PNG) government draw up its geothermal policy.

Dr Clement Waine, Acting Secretary of the Public Enterprise Department, says they have just completed a terms of reference which they will provide to their New Zealand counterparts.

He says the policy will provide a pathway for the government in dealing with resources that will provide energy needs for the country as in other countries.

The policy should cover sources of energy from water to hot springs, wind  to gas and petroleum products.

“We believe this policy will affect the mining and gas policy and so we will be working in consultation with appropriate line agencies,” he says.

Dr Waine says they will also be working closely with the New Zealand government to include in the policy participation and benefits of landowners. It is not clear at this stage when the policy will be ready.
