Geothermal energy could be called an “underground” renewable energy source not only because of its physical origin but also because its importance remains largely unknown to many decision makers and members of the public.

Although historically high oil prices in the early 1980s stimulated a substantial expansion of geothermal capacity, there followed a period of very slow growth for almost 20 years. The past several years, however, have been a boom time for international geothermal energy development, with substantial interest and activity in the United States and many other countries.
