EDC Eyes Relocation of Negros Geothermal Plant by 3Q 2014 (InterAksyon)

Energy Development Corp (EDC) aims to complete the relocation of its shuttered Northern Negros Geothermal Plant (NNGP) to Nasulo, Negros Oriental by the third quarter of next year.

In a report to its stockholders, EDC said the NNGP should be ready for technical and commercial operation by the said period.

In an agreement signed last year, EDC tapped Sumitomo Corp. of Japan for the relocation. Initial civil works, including the construction of the powerhouse, was conducted by EDC affiliate First Balfour Inc. prior to Sumitomo's contract.

Originally located in Negros Occidental, the 49 MWe NNGP was shut down in 2011 after steam production in the project site regressed, resulting in  EDC absorbing more than P5 billion in impairment losses.

In light of this, the company opted to relocate NNGP's electro-mechanical equipment to the 192.5 MWe Palinpinon geothermal power complex in Negros Oriental.
